Make Your Own Comic Book – The Secrets of Self Published Comic Books Online
1. Make Your Own Comic Book – The Secrets of Self Published Comic Books Online By Clay Henss
2. So, you want to be a cartoonist, do you? Perhaps you have spent a lot of time and energy to make your own comic book. And maybe you've submitted your work to countless publishers, but so far to no avail. And you have also toiled into the late hours of the night, into the wee hours of the morning working on your craft. Additionally, you have spent huge amounts of money on self promotion and showed your work to hundreds of professionals in the industry. But even doing all of this, for some reason, you just can't seem to find your way in.
3. Maybe you have this gnawing feeling that your work just isn't meant for the mainstream, and it never will be. Perhaps your audience is more niche. You feel your audience is smarter and darker than the usual rabble who devour super hero comics – they want something unique and with substance. When all these realizations hit, inevitably, you'll shout the same war cry as countless artists and writers who came before you:
4. "I should publish my OWN comic book!" Your fate is now sealed, my friend. You've chosen the hard road. The path you take will be uncertain, frustrating and filled with the peril that only the lonely understand.
5. Being a self published cartoonist isn't easy, but being an artist never is. There are no guarantees. Failure and total obscurity may await you. For those cartoonists who have a passion to tell their stories, free of editorial control, the self publishing bug will prove a tough virus to cure.
6. I don't have much in the way of substantive advice, unfortunately. Like I said, there are no guarantees. Most likely, a handful of people will read your book. And those people are usually friends and family. Printing will come entirely out of your pocket. Distribution is a waking nightmare. Criticism will be unforgiving.
7. Despite all these bleak truths, you just can't give up. You really can make your own comic book and self publish it. Work on your artwork. Write compelling stories. Focus on developing great characters that your readers will be able to feel as if they truly know. It also can help a lot to network with other creators on your social networking pages or even in offline situations. Get your name and art out into the world and in front of your audience.
8. Most importantly, never EVER give up. Clay Henss is the co-creator and artist for the H-Boyz. Check out his work and by his comic at http://www.hboyz.com
