National Tech Research
This afternoon, Apple lifted the veil from the next generation of iPhone. In keeping with last year's
event, the company is announcing two new iPhone models: The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. The
former is a 4.7-inch phone with 1334x750 resolution and a thickness of only 6.9mm. At only 7.1mm
thick, the Plus is Apple's first attempt at a phone-tablet hybrid. It offers about an additional inch of
screen real estate (5.5-inches) and boasts a resolution of 1920x1080. Both phones are larger than
iPhone 5 models, which are getting a price reduction to free for the iPhone 5c and $99 for the 5s.The
body design confirms some of the rumors which have been floating around the Internet for months
now in that the new phones have more rounded corners and a very slim bezel.
The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus will come with iOS 8 out of the box. (The new mobile OS will also be
available as a free download for current iPhone owner on September 17). Apple's A8 chip is 25%
faster than its predecessor, which translates to a 50% performance boost in on-screen graphics. Its
coprocessor, the new M8 chip, is included for tracking motion. In other words, the iPhone 6 will be
able to differentiate physical activities such as running or cycling. Apple is also including a
barometer in the new phones to measure outside air pressure and track elevation changes.
Another notable change to this generation of iPhones is in the battery. It is supposedly better than
that of the iPhone 5s, which just underwent a limited recall, supporting 11 hours of video playback
and Wifi browsing; 10 hours of LTE and 3G browsing. The iPhone 6 will support VoLTE (Voice Over
LTE) and allow users to make calls over Wifi if reception is weak. Speaking of Wifi, both phones use
802.11ac (thrice as fast as 802.11n bands).
The camera isn't really, if you'll excuse the pun, as flashy. Apple is sticking to an 8MP camera, but
implementing new sensors for phase detection, autofocus, tone mapping, and noise reduction.
Theoretically, pictures taken with the iPhone 6 will be better. It is capable How much better is up for
debate. The iPhone 6 Plus will feature optical image stabilization, though, which is a first for any
iPhone. The camera is also capable of shooting video in 1080p at 60 frames-per-second (FPS), slow
motion video at both 120 and 240 FPS, and even time lapse video.
2. The iPhone 6 will be available for pre-order starting Friday, September 12 for $199 (16GB); the
iPhone 6 Plus will cost $299 (16GB). Pricing for both is contingent on a two year contract.
