The first front cover design is a versatile one. There’s no real
target audience as the colours aren’t meant for a particular
gender, this is because I want the magazine to appeal to a wide
range of people, however it is targeted at a younger audience
(proof: bright colours).
Furthermore the main image captivates a ‘hip hop’ image as the
two girls are leaning against a brick wall, dressed in urban
clothing.
Around the edges of the draft there’s names of popular Hip Hop
artists, this is because it will make the magazine appeal to people
as they will associate big names with the magazine.
‘DGR’ (name of the featured band) is in large text and a different
colour to embrace importance.
There’s minimal advertising at the bottom, left of the draft.
Names of big Hip-Hop brands are advertised showing that the
magazine is in with current young fashion.
The purple exclamation mark is a clever way of making the reader
notice the text as an exclamation mark is a symbol of
importance, therefore I have placed text and an image inside it to
gain peoples attention. The facts that ‘win’ is in capitals also
portrays importance.
The other persuasive techniques i used include the words
‘exclusive’ and ‘you’ by using the word exclusive i lead the reader
to believe they are the first to find something out and the word
‘you’ makes the reader think i am talking to them as it directs to
them, all of this will persuade people to purchase ‘Riot’.
Beside the barcode there is the other features the magazine has
to offer, the twitter account and website is written accompanied
by the symbol for each, this makes it clear to understand how to
access them.
The colour scheme of this contents page matches the
one of the first front cover. The title of ‘contents’ is in a
easy to read, large font this makes it clear that the page
is for the contents of the magazine. There are different
sub headings of: entertainment; news; real life, this is
done in order to make it easy for the reader to choose
which section of the magazine they would like to read
about. The subheading of ‘music’ is larger and in a
different to the others to show that the magazine is
about music and revolves around that subject.
Alike to the magazines i researched my contents page
has an advertisement in in. The advertisement I have
chosen to feature is one for an iPod as it is on the
subject of music, I have even paid attention to what the
question of the ‘to win’ advert is and made sure that it
can also relate to the music industry. Furthermore
around the edges of the advert there is repetition of the
word ‘win’ to attract the readers attention.
In addition I have included a pull quote from one of the
articles in the magazine, ‘x factor changed my life’ this
will engage people to read the story.
This magazine cover is targeted at the teen/male audience
as it has a darker, purple/blue colour scheme. The Title
‘Double H’ comes from the magazine genre of Hip-Hop
(there’s two H’s in it). In this draft the masthead line is in a
more urban ‘graffiti’ font to reflect the Hip-Hop culture of
the magazine. The five stars positioned below it provide the
readers with the idea that the magazine is five star quality.
The skyline consists of four words that persuade the
audience to purchase Double-H as they are positive words
that describe the magazine.
The main image is a close up of ‘Magic Mo’ he is wearing
Nike (a popular brand amongst teens) and has his ear
pierced and eyebrows slit, there are the charecteristics of a
‘typical rapper’ he also has a cigarette in his mouth to
create a ‘big man’ image. The cover line that says ‘magic
mo’ is in large font to stand out from the rest of the text on
the cover as it is the main featured story, the writing
underneath this claims ‘magic mo tells Double H his side of
the story’ there is a bold positioned to look like it is electric
shocked the word ‘story’ to show that it may be a
controversial story this creates excitement.
I have also included the common conventions of any
magazine; price, website and date of release.
There’s a sticker at the bottom left that claims ‘voted #1
music magazine’ this is valuable information to the readers
as they will be persuaded by this claim.
Lastly there’s an image of a page inside the magazine to
give the readers a taste of what the magazine has to offer.
The colour scheme of this contents page is the same as
the one of the second front cover design. The design of
this contents page is very simplistic . There are no
headlines for certain topics in the magazine just a page 1
-70 list of articles.
Additionally I included a message from the editor in
order to connect to the audience, this was a popular
feature in the magazines that i researched.
Along the right, side bar there are four different sections
some of which are brief advertisements for trainers and
competitions that you will find inside the magazine. The
bottom advertisement boosts publicity of Double H as it
shows a free app that you can download in order to gain
more music news, this will attract a younger audience as
they tend to be more technologically involved.
This front cover is targeted at the female market as it uses a more
feminine and bright colour scheme of pink, yellow and orange. The
image represents Hip-Hop culture perfectly as the artist is wearing
urban clothing, leaning on a huge speaker system (also relates to
music). The masthead line also is in graffiti font to show the urban side
of the magazine.
The neon yellow lines are used to separate the different cover lines
and sections of the front cover, this make sit easy to read and
organised.
The skyline is persuasive as it tells readers they can win free stuff
which is a desirable characteristic of a magazine. The cover headline
relates to the image as it says ‘my tattoo addiction’ and in the image
the artist has many tattoos.
As well as using magazine conventions such as the
barcode, price, issue date and website I also used a blackberry pin
barcode to get in touch with our younger audience,.
The cover line on the left that says ‘bigger and better , our improved
issue’ makes the reader want to buy the magazine to identify all the
new features it has to offer. The cover line on the right shows images
of trainers as a way of advertising and relating to the target
audience, it also says ‘best places to get your laces’ this use of rhyme
will attract buyers.
The box at the bottom, rights has a short intro to another story within
the magazine, the word ‘confessions’ is in red and capitals to create a
exiting and intriguing atmosphere.
This contents is a follow up from the third front cover
draft as it has the same colour scheme and font. I have
designed this contents page in a fresh, unique and
modern way. Instead of listing all the articles in the
magazine I used a picture of the front cover and
evaluated the different article pages of the cover lines
on the cover, this instantly draws the reader to read the
stories that they first saw on the cover.
Below this There are three sections of music;
entertainment and style (each has a symbol which is
easy to recognise) .
A special feature of the contents page is the section at
the bottom left which is called ‘OMG moment of the
week’ every week readers will expect to find exiting
showbiz stories on the contents page.
Horizontally opposite to this is use of a small
advertisement for Adidas (a big Hip-Hop brand) that is
in a shape of a gift with the words, from: us ; to: you.
This once again directs the audience and makes them
feel involved.
