I became a convert when I saw that even a design I thought was excellent could be significantly improved by throwing it into a round of generative design.

There are several people in the development community delivering this message, now, including Design Studio [The video of their 2006 conference presentation is gone! Who has details?], Bill Buxton at UPA in 2007, and Jerome Ryckborst at UPA and at CanUX in 2008.

Thanks for sharing this presentation. Check out http://fivesketches.com, which has generative design (divergence followed by convergence) as one of its pillars.

    Hi there, guestf38e7b,

I don't think you have to have a lot of time and budget to do this kind of brainstorming. An hour-long meeting at just the right point in the process (usually before detailed design is underway) might get you further than you think. Even if you do nothing else, simply forcing yourself to sketch out five ideas before you commit to one will advance the state of your work. If anyone else tries out any of these techniques, I'd love to hear what their experiences are.

This is a fabulous module showing how to really stretch out and peel the onion. Great reminder for those of us who often are doing this alone or with limited time frames - having a strategy means not reinventing the wheel - which is a good practice to avoid. The question for me is how do you do it when there neither time nor budget is built in to work through the many solutions that might be. - PS I'm moving to San Fran to work with you all!

    Hi guest 6d0694,

Thanks for commenting. I'm in complete agreement. I don't really believe in the concept of the 'one true design' either, and my personal story is actually kind of the tale of trying to pretend that I had that 'one true design' when I knew it wasn't true. With that said, while I believe there are many possible solutions to a problem, I also believe that some solutions address the constraints and opportunities more effectively, and that's what the design principles concept is all about. Once you've done due diligence in brainstorming and exploring multiple directions, how do you identify not the one true design, but the one (or several) that present better solutions for the specific problem at hand? Anyway. Thanks again for the good feedback.

Love this presentation generally, but you talk about the 'one true design' or the 'right design' and I wonder about that. It seems we often get 'a design' one that is great in terms of the situation we are in vis-a-vis time, resources, client participation etc. Talking about the 'one true design' 'THE solution' etc seems a little off to me.

Great job, Leah -- I highly recommend this talk to anyone involved in UX. Kudos for great comics and a fantastic succinct description of the design process. I hear you will be presenting again at the UXWeek, so don't miss it, everyone!

Great presentation! I like how you called out the spectrum, 2x2, and grid (I use them all the time but have never seen them clearly described as a set before).
