According to Global Health Risks, “Mortality and burden ofdisease attributable to selected major risks indoor airpollution is responsible for 2.7% of the global burden ofdisease.” Both health experts and consumers have nowbecome increasingly concerned about the increase in airpollution indoors and its impact on human health.
Indoor air quality (IAQ) refers to the air quality within andaround buildings and structures. In recent years, there hasbeen a growing body of research compiled that isdemonstrating that the air within homes and otherbuildings can be more polluted than the outdoor air andother research has found that people now spend about 90percent of their time indoors. As a result, the risk ofdisease and illness is now much higher for thoseconstantly exposed to air pollution indoors. For thisreason, health organizations and government agenciesare offering guides and manuals on improving the qualityof air within homes and buildings.
Today, consumers can find a wealth of information onlineabout the various ways they can reduce or eliminateindoor air pollution. Solutions to improving indoor airquality can range from something simple like usingchemical free cleaners, making the home smoke free,putting a humidifier in the basement, changing air filtersfrequently, and making sure there is adequate ventilationthroughout the home. Or, people can be more proactiveby getting their indoor air tested for contaminants, hiringprofessional duct cleaners to give their air ducts athorough cleaning, replacing all household and personalcare products containing chemicals with more naturalproducts, and taking steps to remove common sources ofpollution, or reduce their emissions.
