### Density

1. 1. Density • A measure of how much matter (mass) is contained in a volume of a substance Mass – “stuff” Volume- “space” Density- how much “stuff” is in the “space” of a substance
2. 2. Density Depends on: The type of atom(s) Lead atoms are more massive than aluminum atoms
3. 3. Density How tightly packed the atoms are Water molecules are closer together than O2 and N2 in the air
4. 4. Density  Water – 1 g/cm3  Every cm3 weighs 1g  1 cm3 = 1mL  Oil- 0.9 g/cm3
5. 5. Density D = m/V D = density in g/cm3 m = mass in g V = volume in cm3
6. 6. Density • Find mass with a balance or a scale • Find volume: • Length x width x height or • Water displacement
7. 7. Density • Find mass with a balance or a scale • Find volume: • Length x width x height or • Water displacement
