The original Evil Dead trilogy is a low budget horror/comedy series created and directed by Sam Raimi in 1981, which has become a cult classic and earned a huge fan-base. It is a B-movie storyline filled with huge amounts of gore and strange fantasy elements, bad dialogue and madcap characters. In 2006 it was converted into a musical celebrating its abundance of blood, off-the-wall occurrences and colourful dialogue.

The trilogy follows Ash Williams, played by Bruce Campbell, who takes his girlfriend out to a cabin in the woods for a few days. There he finds a tape and unknowingly plays a voice recording of a spell from the Necronomicon, the book of the dead, unleashing a horde of evil spirits that he must fight off to survive. With the help of his trusty chainsaw, Ash eventually succeeds and opens a wormhole which casts himself back in time where he must retrieve the Necronomicon in order to defeat the deadites and return home to the present. The trilogy ends with Ash waking up after sending himself forward in time, only to find he has gone too far into the future.

Recently there have been rumours of a new Evil Dead movie in development, either a sequel or remake. I’ve wanted to make my own fourth and final chapter of the story for some time and direct it the way I feel the movie should progress. This is my proposal for the way I would create Evil Dead IV. One of the benefits of continuing the previous 3 movies is that there is an obvious lack of regard to continuity; Evil Dead 2 was filmed as a re-make and sequel, re-introducing and changing many of the events of the first movie as well as continuing the story but this actually emphasizes the rest of the trilogy’s B-movie quality and adds to the mood. Having the freedom to modify events and characters from the other movies is a huge advantage because it means I am able to take the plot for the new film in any direction.

Based on the reaction I’ve had from talking to other fans of the series, I’ve come up with a story for the film. Evil Dead IV will centre around Ash returning to the cabin where the nightmare began, intending to destroy the recording that unleashed the spirits. However when he gets there he finds that a small group of teenagers have stumbled across the cabin and accidently played the tape. This time Ash must search out the possessed victims before they escape the woods and wreak havoc on the world.
