  • 1. Description of UC Riverside, Library, and Staffing
    • The University of California Riverside Libraries, Catalog Metadata Services Department.
    • UCR's current enrollment is 17,187 students with a goal of 21,000 students by 2010.
    • The University of California, Riverside libraries consist of four libraries on the UCR main campus.
      • The Tomás Rivera Library
      • The Science Library
      • The Music Library
      • The Multimedia Library
    • Approximately 150 librarians and staff
    • Mr. Manuel Urrizola
    • Head of Catalog Metadata Services Department.
      • M.L.S. from U.C. Berkley
      • A trainer of Serials Cooperative Cataloging Training Program
      • A winner of District Humorous Contests of Toastmasters International in 2005/06 and 2006/07
    • His roles:
    • A Manager, a teacher, a resource, representing the catalog department in meetings
    • Make sure that catalogers and their work are recognized
  • Description of UCR Library cont .
    • The UCR Catalog Metadata Services Department
    • 1. Two Groups:
      • Cataloging policy group
      • Bibliographic cataloging group
      • 2. Three Librarians and 13 Staff:
      • Library assistances are classified as level 1 through 5
      • Each librarians and staff have specialties
      • 3. Current Employment Situation:
      • Recent new positions (project)
        • Anime & Manga (Special Collection)
        • Southeast Asian (17,000 Thai materials)
      • Retirement of experienced catalogers
      • No new position to open up due to the state budget crisis
  • 2. Productivity
    • Bibliographic code level – Full level “I”
    • No official quota in the department
    • Each cataloger keep their statistics
    • The department track the productivity
    • Different levels of productivity are expected for each catalogers
    • Different expectation for certain type of formats
    • Backlogs are reducing (Due to the budget crisis)
    • Guideline and Training are important to improve the productivity
    • Cataloging expertise improves the productivity
  • 3. New Technologies, Enhancement of Online Cataloging
    • Use the following online cataloging tools:
    • Cataloger’s Desktop, Classification Web, Bib formats, Cutter tables, MARC 21, Romanization online tools
    • The department has a cataloging website which stores all of the online cataloging tools, links, and annual report data files
    • The department welcomes new technology whenever the catalogers are ready to participate in the development of social software: Blogs and Wiki
    • Digitizing a small photograph collection project
  • 4. Transition to Metadata Standards
    • Use MARC
    • Use TACT for archival
    • Will use metadata for photograph digitizing project
    • Map librarian has interest but not started
    • Home to INFOMINE , which used Dublin Core
      • Not in much use now (last updated July 2004)
  • 5. Cataloging of Web Sites and Digital, Special Collections
    • J. Lloyd Eaton Science Fiction Collection and Fanzine Collections
    • Tomás Rivera Archive
    • The Western Region Tuskegee Airmen Archive
    • UCR University Archives
    • The Rupert Costo Library of the American Indian
    • The Petko Collection on the History of the Book and Printing special collection.
    • Electronic materials cataloged by UC San Diego as part of the Shared Cataloging Project
    • Full level cataloging - except special projects, foreign language where no specialty: Ex. Thai collection recently acquired
  • 6. Library Catalog/Metadata Training and Presentation
    • No metadata training currently since not in use
    • Mr. Manuel Urrizola trains catalogers & Interns
    • Some training with Public Services department
    • Occasional presentation for public, but on how to use library not cataloging
    • Reference Desk:
      • No one in cataloging department proper.
      • One woman in acquisitions does for few hours each week.
      • Mr. Urrizola would like to when he has time.
  • 7. Database Maintenance, Holdings, and Physical Processing
      • MARCIVE used for authority control and maintenance
      • In house control for errors such typos or corrections to subject headings
      • Library Assistant III assigned to make these corrections
        • *these corrections handled as discovered
        • *returned to person committing error only when beneficial for instructional purposes
      • Mr. Urizolla plans to have all catalogers NACO trained as funding becomes available
      • Acquisitions may create a brief record when new materials arrive, but catalogers perform all original cataloging
      • UCR employs serials librarians that create check-in items and holdings records, but they do not catalog
      • Electronic resources are cataloged by UCSD through the UC System Shared Cataloging Project
      • The Preservation Department performs binding and labeling, staff concerns about call numbering prevent the use of shelf-ready services
  • 8. Relationship with Acquisitions Departments
    • Cataloging and Acquisitions are housed in separate departments
    • However UCR plans to follow Library of Congress’ lead and combine them in the near future
      • Hope to streamline processing through cross-training
      • Create stronger collaborative relationships between staff in these departments
      • Currently no Web 2.0 tools are used to promote collaboration relationships between the departments
        • *waiting for committed interest from staff members
  • 9. Staff Education
    • UCR provides in-house training on the following:
    • MARC holdings format
    • Cataloging of non-books and e-resources
    • RDA: initial introductory training
    • FRBR: limited training
    • Implementation of a new integrated library system and its various components
  • Staff Education Con’t.
    • The following trainings are done outside of the department:
      • Social networking
      • Familiarity with XML (Extensible Markup Language), database tools and design
      • Web-oriented service architecture
    • UCR does not provide trainings on the following:
      • Training in institutional repository work: no repository on campus
      • Foreign language cataloging: hire people with particular foreign language or subject expertise
  • 10. Other Issues Facing Library Cataloging Staffs
    • Limited budget
    • Involvement of digitization projects
    • Complexity of the implementation of RDA and other new rules
    • Training on new online cataloging enhancements
    • Education of the benefits of controlled subject and classification access for the patrons and librarians
