  • The biggest contributing factor that is causing major flooding in the Greater Metro Manila area is the continued reclamation projects being undertaken by the government, dating back during the Marcos' regime.

The technique used in the reclamation is accomplished by dumping tons of rocks /boulders /dirts, etc., taken from inland mountains and dropped onto the water until a more rigid bed is established. Then further reinforced by concrete pilings driven to secure non-movement of these beds. This is the easiest, fastest, and cheapest way of establishing a reclaimed area! Having said that, this process is also the main culprit why we are now experiencing the regular flooding, aside from the illegal dumping of garbage and narrowing of all tributaries that are supposed to be facilitating the easy outflow of floodwater to the sea.
Since the dirt, rocks, etc., needed to fill the reclamation project were not taken from the ocean or sea itself, by dredging the ocean deeper,The equivalent volume of the displaced ocean water has no other place to go but up bringing the sea level higher than the existing land which was already below sea level to begin with!!
This scenario is no different to a container that is about full of water, that when we drop something solid into it will eventually push the water level higher - until it overflow and spill to the surrounding areas!!

The more reclamation projects is undertaken, without getting the needed filling materials from the same ocean floor, will bring in more deeper and longer floods in the country. Floods that are caused by the regular high tides, and rainfalls, not even considering global warming that many are using as another excuse!!
