Origins <ul><li>Brain child of Samuel H. Lockett, Chief engineer under Gen. Pemberton. </li></ul><ul><li>Fortifications are concentrated on a series of ridges that surround Vicksburg. </li></ul><ul><li>These ridges were used in conjunction with gorges, or otherwise known as abatis to limit the assault of enemy troops. </li></ul>
Types of Fortifications <ul><li>Redan: two earthernwork faces that have joined together to form a salient angle. </li></ul><ul><li>Redoubt: same as a redan, except for a redoubt is closed at the rear. </li></ul><ul><li>Lunette: a top of a gorge that is traced with two faces that form a salient angle and with two flanks adjoining the faces. </li></ul><ul><li>Abatis: gorges to break the momentum of the assualting body of troops, used extensively before previously mentioned earthworks. </li></ul>
