2. Vocation
Active life-
The life lived by religious
orders who work in society as
well as praying.
Contemplative life- The life of
prayer and meditation lived by
some religious orders.
The Evangelical counsels- The
vows of poverty, chastity and
obedience.
Vocation- A call from God to
lead the Christian life.
Vocation in daily life:
Being honest
and fair in their
dealings with
others
Assisting the priest
as readers and
Eucharistic
ministers.
Praying and
attending mass.
Serving
people who
suffer.
Getting married
and raising
children as
Christians
The monastic life-
Living as a monk or
nun in a religious
community.
Religious community- A
religious order who live
together as a group.
Charity- Voluntary
giving to those in need
3. Holy Orders- The status of a bishop, priest or deacon.
Holy Orders
Bishops and priests
Ordained ministers who are
called to serve God as ordained
ministers. They dedicate their entire
lives to leading people in worship. They
don’t marry or have a family, so that
they can concentrate on their jobs.
They don’t have a proper salary but
they are given what they need.
Their work can be hard and lonely, so
they receive a special sacrament
called Holy Orders to give them strength.
Permanent deacons
The training to become a priest
takes 6 years. In the last year,
they become deacons.
Deacons assist their local parish
Priest in the church. Deacons
can marry and have a family.
Some remain deacons
all their lives.
Women priests
Catholic Church and Orthodox
Churches believe that it is against
the will of God for women to be
priests. The Protestant Church has
allowed the ordination of women
for many years because they
think God would want women
to have the same rights as men.
Ordained ministers
in the modern world.
Ordained ministers go out and
preach about Jesus and try to
bring people back to a life of
faith and the worship of God.
4. WORKING FOR
COMMUNITY COHESION
IN THE UK
Interfaith dialogue
Different faiths coming
together to promote good
relations
Working for
economic justice
The group CAP (church action on
poverty), tackles poverty and helps
asylum seekers and refugees
The Church works to
encourage different ethnic
minority groups to
participate in church.
The Church
working for racial
equality
4.4 Social Cohesion
5. 4.5 The Ten Commandments
The Ten Commandments are perhaps
the most important rules ever written.
They were given to God by Moses.
They can be divided into two groups:
3 of them tell us how to show love
for God.
7 show us how to behave towards
others.
6. God gave these
which makes
them more
important than
any man-made
rules.
Keeping the Ten
commandments
shows respect
for God.
The laws in the
U.K. And in
many countries
are based on the
Ten
Commandments
.
The Ten
commandments reflect
many problems faced
by Christians today.
They teach about
important issues.
7. The Sermon on the mount and Law of MOSES
Moses Law Jesus’
interpretation
Do not kill
Do not commit
adultery
Divorce can sometimes
be permitted
You can demand an
eye for an eye
Love your enemy,
hate your neighbour
Don’t even be angry with
your brother
Don’t even look at another
person lustfully
Divorce is strictly
forbidden
If someone wants your
coat, give them your shirt
Love your enemies and
pray for them
8. 4.7 The Sermon on the mount and
DISPLAYING RELIGION
Jesus said
we should
pray, but
quietly and
in private
We should fast
but not tell
everyone we
are doing it.
We should give
to charity but
privately.
9. (d) “Christians should not display
their religion”. Do you agree?
FOR
• Christians should
show love for God,
not public praise.
• Displaying religion
means the only
reward will be from
others not God
• It’s the teaching of
Jesus not to display
religion
Against
• The Church
encourages everyone
to worship.
• The Church organises
processions, e.g.
Lourdes
• It is impossible to fulfil
a religious duty
without displaying
religion
10. • Others would disagree
because....The Church
encourages people to
worship, attend
church
• The church organises
processions at
festivals, pilgrimages
to different places
• Some would agree
with me because...
• Jesus said we should
pray in private.....
• We shouldn’t thrive
on public praise
become hypocrites
Displaying religion is seen as a bad thing. Do you agree?
11. What did Jesus say about money?
1. God will give us all we need
2. The poor will be rewarded
3. Do not store up on wealth on earth
4. Give money in secret
5. Don’t worry about food or clothes
12. “Jesus’ teaching on wealth is
too hard to follow”.
FOR:
• To survive in today’s
world, you have to save
up.
• It is hard not to want good
clothes, a nice car, etc.,
when you are bombarded
with consumer
advertising.
• It is hard to share more
than a small part of your
wealth with the poor.
AGAINST:
• It is better to gain spiritually
than financially.
• Giving to the poor brings
rewards.
• If we trust God, he will
ensure we are secure
financially.
• It’s important that money
isn’t worshipped.
13. The Golden rule and judging others
• Jesus said the rule summed up
the whole of the Jewish law and
the teachings of the prophets.
• In the parable of the sheep and
the goats, Jesus said that following
this rule would gain entry to
heaven.
• Jesus lived by this rule. He
forgave people and healed people.
Christians should follow his
example.
• It’s a simple guide to making
decisions in all situations.
The Golden rule states that “we should treat others the way we would like
to be treated”.
Jesus made it clear in the sermon on the mount that this rule was very
important and we should all abide by it.
14. SVP was founded by Frederic Ozanam in Paris.
It has been an active charity in the UK since1844. It’s
named after a famous priest St.Vincent who looked after
the poor.
The society has over 10,000 volunteers in the UK. They
work to relieve poverty by:
•Visiting the sick and the elderly,
•Organising holiday schemes for children from poor or
broken homes.
•Organising affordable housing for the homeless,
Providing drop-in centres for lonely people so they can
socialise.
•Providing support centres so people can get advice about
their finances.
4.10 Relieving poverty and suffering
in the U.K.
15. (d)“Catholics aren’t doing enough to relieve
poverty and suffering in the U.K.” (6)
AGREE:
1. Not all Catholics are
involved in helping
relieve poverty.
2. Not all parishes have
an SVP group.
3. There is a lot of
poverty that SVP
does not tackle
DISAGREE:
1. Provide
information
about the work that
SVP does.
16. How some Christians
are involved in working for
social justice in the Church
The Catechism of the
Church teaches that
every person has
right to food, clothing, etc.
Some Christians form their own
groups to take part in local
activities with other faiths and
minority groups to improve
the quality of life of people in
communities.
Many Christians work for
social and community
cohesion by having friends
from different faiths and
ethnic groups.
Catholics follow in the footsteps of
Jesus and go out and help people
who suffer e.g. SVP provides
Practical Help.
Churches together promotes
Community cohesion by making
sure Catholic schools are open
to all ethnic groups
