The reason for its popularity is the combination of its great taste and how easy it is to grow the fresh fruit. This is good news for gardeners of any skill level. The raspberry has a long history dating back to ancient Greece and even the legendary city of Troy. According to history, the inhabitants of this walled city picked fresh raspberries that grew wildly in the surrounding foothills. However, it wasn’t until decades later that this unique fruit made its way across the ancient world. It traversed from Asia Minor east across the Roman Empire. Similar to the tart raspberry and other fruits, it was the Romans that introduced the ancient world to this delicate fruit. The vast Roman Empire spanning from the Black Sea to England offered the perfect backdrop to getting the “word out” about the raspberry. Vines can be found many Roman towns across the Empire. Once the raspberry took root it found its way across the Atlantic to the New World. However, it wasn’t until the early 1700’s that the raspberry became a mainstay fruit in the America. The first nursery that began selling raspberry plants was started by William Prince. Since the raspberry plant is easy to plant and care for, it soon exploded in popularity and has since been enjoyed by countless individuals in the New World.

This grouping is based upon the growing season of the raspberry. The “Ever-bearing” varieties produce fruit twice a year, once in the summer and again in the fall. The “Summer-bearing” varieties only produce fruit in during the summer harvest. In addition to the varieties, raspberries can also be divided into categories based upon the color of the final fruit. These categories include red, black, purple and yellow/gold in colors. While there are a number of different varieties the more popular varieties include:  Amity  Fall Gold  Black Hawk  Brandywine  Meeker  Latham One of the most popular variety is the Meeker. An antioxidant may be defined as various substances including but not limited to (beta-carotene, melatonin and Vitamin C). These may inhibit oxidation promoted by oxygen and antioxidants may help protect the body from the effects of damaging free radicals. A number of studies have repeatedly shown that maintaining high levels of antioxidants may help to maintain a healthy body. What exactly is a free radical? Free radicals can be defined as unstable molecules that have lost an oxygen molecule. Basically, these unsteady molecules steal oxygen molecules from healthy cells. A real world example of the affects of free radicals on healthy cells is the actual browning of a freshly cut apple or potato.
