  • 24. Pathos (Emotional Appeal) means persuading by appealing tothe readers emotions. Language choice affects the audiencesemotional response, and emotional appeal can effectively beused to enhance an argument.Ethos (Ethical appeal) means convincing by the character ofthe author. We tend to believe people whom we respect. One ofthe central problems of argumentation is to project an impressionto the reader that you are someone worth listening to, in otherwords making yourself as author into an authority on the subjectof the paper, as well as someone who is likable and worthy ofrespect.Logos (Logical Appeal) means persuading by the use of reasoning.Look at deductive and inductive reasoning, and discuss whatmakes an effective, persuasive reason to back up your claims.Giving reasons is the heart of argumentation, and cannot beemphasized enough.
