  • Air pollution causes risks to human health and the environment. Exposure to air pollution can cause health problems and increased morbidity of respiratory diseases, cardiovascular diseases. Some air pollutants can also cause cancer. Air pollution adverse impact on nature takes its form in acidification, damage to plants and eutrophication. In law, there are environmental quality standards for outdoor air, which indicates the high levels of various air pollutants that are allowed. It is the municipality's task to monitor air quality and ensure the environmental quality standards. How does this affect our health? Air pollution affects human health and contribute to increased number of emergency hospital admissions as to increased mortality, primarily from cardiovascular disease. Some people are sensitive to air pollutants, such as older people with cardiovascular disease or with bronchitis and asthma. Although children are more sensitive. Generally, health risks from air pollutants greater for all city dwellers than for rural population. Particulates can cause cardiovascular disease and respiratory disease. Our health is affected even at low particle concentrations. If the levels in the city decreased by 5 micrograms per cubic meter would run in Gothenburg to prevent about 100 deaths per year. Harmful particles are formed first, road surface attrition, where studded tires are one of the major culprits, and partly during combustion in engines. Both hydrocarbons and nitrogen forms in turn unhealthy ground-level ozone can irritate the airways and in higher concentrations probably impair lung function and to have inflammatory effects. In the long term in a global perspective, for all humanity, it is probably mainly air pollution impact on the ozone layer and contributing to the greenhouse effect are the major threats

Stations must perform different functions. The fixed takstationerna shows regional impact and long-term trends. The fixed ground stations shows the situation where people are present and the mobile stations are moved around to different places, often in locations where future development is planned. All measurements were also serves as validation of the calculation model. Environmental quality standard for nitrogen dioxide is the norm that is most difficult to cope in Gothenburg. Municipality-wide estimates of nitrogen dioxide, it is every year and made available through, inter alia, the Municipality of common planning tool, Info Viewer. The calculations include an emission database and a meteorological database. It is a fairly major task to keep databases up to date, but the database also has other uses. For example, the databases as the source of emissions data to the environmental report and short term forecasts of particle concentrations. Long series of measurements of quality are becoming increasingly more interesting from a research point of view. To function as a resource and partner for research is a priority
  • Today, data from the environmental management stations to a portlet on goteborg.se / air. An assessment of how high the levels are made​​, based on the different concentration ranges (see indextablå.xls) converted into points. According to a non-linear scale is assigned to each level of each pollutant a point number between 0 and 4. The way to calculate the trend differs between the different parameters (see trender_index.xls). The portlet on goteborg.se / air calculates the trend arrows to look. On the other hand delivered the assessment point of the source data file.
