March 2, 2011 - Ongoing Training for Mentors, part of monthly Quality In Action webinar series hosted by the Mentoring Partnership of Minnesota.

Standard 5 of the Elements of Effective Practice for Mentoring™, Third Edition outlines benchmarks for providing quality monitoring and support for matches. One of those benchmarks is that programs provide "one or more opportunities per year for post-match mentor training." Join this webinar to learn and share ongoing training resources, ideas for training topics, and strategies for getting mentors to show up. Amy Cannata from the National Mentoring Center will talk about their new FREE resource, Talking it Through: Communication Skills for Mentors, an interactive website that uses video stories and other tools to enhance ongoing mentor training.

  • 4. Elements of Effective Practice: Standard 5: Monitoring and Support
    • Standard:
    • Monitor mentoring relationship milestones and support mentors with ongoing advice, problem-solving support and training opportunities for the duration of the relationship.
    • Benchmark:
    • B.5.3 Program provides mentors with access to at least two types of resources (e.g., expert advice from program staff or others; publications; Web-based resources; experienced mentors; available social service referrals) to help mentors negotiate challenges in the mentoring relationships as they arise.
    • B.5.5 Program provides one or more opportunities per year for post-match mentor training.
  • 5. Importance of Ongoing Training
    • Stronger relationship
    • Mentors who receive more post-match training and support from program staff tend to spend more hours per month with their mentees. (Furano et al., 1993; Tierney and Branch, 1992)
    • In turn, spending more hours with a mentee is related to stronger relationship development.
    • Ongoing training and program support of mentors is particularly valuable for the development of emotionally supportive relationships

  • 6. Importance of Ongoing Training
    • Retention of mentors
    • Retaining engaged and committed mentors has a lot to do with the extent to which a program applies best practices to its infrastructure and activities, regardless of the age of the mentor (Taylor, 2000).
    • Mentors need training, ongoing supervision, access to support from staff and other mentors, and recognition for their accomplishments.
    • Age 50+ adults want to know that they are connected to a viable organization with a “track record” in the community. They like to work in teams, and they want to know their participation will help meet the mission of the organization (Bressler et al., 2004).
    • Consequently, mentor retention is tied to the degree to which programs are mission-driven and successful in creating a sense of camaraderie (Taylor et al., 1999).

    • Review the course in preparation for mentors' questions
    • Understand your program's policies and procedures related to the topics covered
    • Consider using the stories in face-to-face training
    • Check understanding and provide a deeper level of learning by reviewing your mentors reflections
    • Plan a follow-up face-to-face training to discuss the stories in-depth
