  5. 5. Why BRAND SharePoint?4
  6. 6. Why Brand SharePoint?• Some say it’s not important (10 Reasons Not to Brand SharePoint - Michael T. Smith)• Let’s address some of these based on his assumption that branding is updating the masterpage, page layouts and css only.• Let’s see if it’s valuable or not… deal? 5
  7. 7. Why Brand SharePoint?Would you pay to brand Microsoft Excel? Thenyou should not brand SharePoint. FALSE• The out of the box use of SharePoint doesn’t look like your public corporate style. Is your style Microsoft’s version of style, color and vibe - Bland? Employees should have a deep experience of your services and products. (example: cobbler with no shoes).• SharePoint can be the VOICE of your COMPANY, is that voice generic and boring? Align it with your corporate goals.• Yes, it’s a collaboration tool, but branding can involve rearranging the design to be more visually impactful, interesting and easier to use for your employees… don’t you want employees to visit frequently and stay engaged? 6
  8. 8. Why Brand SharePoint? The real-world branding costs can easily be in thehundreds of dollars per user and provide only a cosmeticbenefit - FALSE. • Branding is not just cosmetic. • It includes information architecture which helps arrange information in easy to find and logical groups. • Ensures that the layout is based on research that will ensure it aligns corporate goals, meet employee needs and fulfills a way for your employees company to have a POSITIVE experience of your company. • Invest in your people…making them productive and happy AFFECTS your bottom line! 7
  9. 9. Why Brand SharePoint?Customizing UIs takes time and often delays the start of anew SharePoint installation. TRUE. • Yes, any type of planning for success does take time. “Measure twice cut once” may save your company from employees making SharePoint a “DIRTY WORD”. Don’t just throw out SharePoint to the employees without any vision, planning , governance or organization. • Risks for just deploying out of the box are that your site will become an unmanaged mess of sites within sites within sites and no clear ownership, lack of consistency and lack of unity in color, fonts, imagery and overall lack of organization. • If you fail to plan, you plan to fail, which will show your employees how much you care about them. 8
  10. 10. Why Brand SharePoint?Custom UIs require custom training; without it,users are less productive. FALSE• Training will be the same or less. The purpose of customizing SharePoint is to reduce the burden of training for most users.• Most people who have never used SharePoint will need the same training as a branded site, if you realized it’s just reorganized information, planning and an interactive interface that doesn’t come out of the box.• You can use the same Microsoft SharePoint training and support resources, including instructor-led classes, books, online videos, and endless web resources without extra cost from branding.• Any third party web parts, usually come with instructions, no additional training cost required. 9
  11. 11. Why Brand SharePoint?Custom UIs require custom training; without it,users are less productive. FALSE• Training will be the same or less. The purpose of customizing SharePoint is to reduce the burden of training for most users and make it EASIER TO USE!• Most people who have never used SharePoint will need the same training as a branded site.• Organizing your information and planning an interactive interface just doesn’t come out of the box.• You can use the same Microsoft SharePoint training (from out of the box) and support resources, including instructor- led classes, books, online videos, and endless web resources without extra cost from branding.• Any third party web parts, usually come with instructions, no additional training cost required. 10
  12. 12. 4 More Reasons WHY YOU SHOULD 1. Building Trust – Successful environments instill a sense of confidence in employees. People need to be sure that someone is “minding the store”, that information is accurate and up to date. Branding sends a message that someone is working to make the intranet a special place and that the company is serious enough about it to brand the environment to reflect company values. 2. A Sense of Place – Most employees take pride in their work and their company. Branding the company intranet gives them a place to call home. A comfortable place to get information and work within that is a reflection of company culture. 3. Organization Through Visual Queues – Ask ten SharePoint Architects how to organize a corporate intranet and you will get ten different answers. Using branding and graphical assets to reinforce organizational structure is a great way to help users quickly and easily identify their location within a large corporate intranet. Blue is HR, red is marketing, etc. you get the idea. 4. Define where the intranet starts and ends – Not everyone is tech savvy – some have trouble what the intranet is… help them have clarity through brand. 11

  19. 19. What isUser Experience? 18
  20. 20. User Experience drives behavior and action. Which Affects their impacts time,How a user feels behavior and cost, profitabout a system choices and satisfactionBad experience Undesired Behavior & Choices Negative Impact- Slow - Abandon use - No Adoption / Low usage - No user actions - No Conversions- Hard to use - Don’t trust data think it’s - Wasted investment- Boring/Outdated outdated - User Frustration- Disorganized - Frustrated/Can’t find information - No goal or vision- Not effective - Can’t tell if it’s meeting goals alignmentGood experience Desired Behavior & Choices- Speedy - Repeat Returns to use Positive Impact- Simple to use - Drive buys/call to action - High Adoption / High Usage - Users stay on site & interested - Higher Conversions- Engaging - Easy to find info - Return on Investment- Organized - Meets company goals - User / Customer- Effective Satisfaction - Corporate Goal/Vision Alignment 19
  21. 21. How do you create UX? User Centered Design (UCD) Process puts users at the center of the design process… Using requirements as a foundation, we architect with the USERs needs in mind. 20
  22. 22. What isthe UCD Process? 21
  23. 23. UCD Steps BENEFITS • Increase your products value to your customers • Avoid unexpected future costs from failed designs1. Analysis • Reduce your development cost by detecting design problems2. Design early and increasing your web site or applications efficiency and focus3. Evaluation4. Implementation 22
  24. 24. Can I really do it?• It’s really a question of skill and time…Does NOT Require REQUIRESSharePoint Designer SharePoint Designer, Image Design Tools & More Custom Themes Custom CSS Master Page 23
  25. 25. What are those?• Themes – allow color & font changes to site but no structural changes• Custom CSS only – allow color & font changes with some limited structural changes• MasterPages – Are considered a way to TEMPLATE the entire site with a look/feel/design. *May require CSS and customized page layouts to ensure additional customization. 24
  26. 26. ThemesProject Estimation• Low Effort – OOTB Master Pages & Themes• Medium Effort – Custom Themes or Alternate CSS• Full/High Effort – Custom Master Pages & Page Layouts• Can you do it? Do you have time and skill? 25
