Berwick Academy - A Global VillagePresentation Transcript
In 1990, Donella Meadows, a Dartmouth College Professor, published an article titled, “State of the Village Report”. Her goal was to help people understand the condition of the worlds’ population. In order to do this, she mathematically reduced the entire world’s population to a village of 1000 people in which the inhabitants reflected the makeup of the real world’s population. For example, in this village of 1000, there are 584 Asians, 123 Africans, 95 Europeans, etc.
Later this year, the world’s population is expected to reach
7 billion (7,000,000,000).
Coincidentally, the total population of Berwick Academy is roughly 700. The world’s population is 10 million times greater than the population of Berwick Academy.
Let’s follow the lead of Donella Meadows. Imaging the Earth’s population shrunk down (by a factor of 10 million) so that Berwick Academy is the world.
(All numbers are rounded up or down to the nearest whole number (4.5 Columbians and 3.4 Canadians become 5 Columbians and 3 Canadians).
