  2. 2. Recent highlights The images of the 9-11 attacks on America will never fade from the minds of most Americans. But for Maj. Gen. Lynn Hartsell (far left) and his wife, Lt. Col. Janet Jones-Hartsell (center), who were stationed in the Pentagon at the time of the attacks, the events changed their lives forever, said the couple during a presentation at the community. Resident Gail Kristensen also shared his memories from that day. Gail lived near the Washington, D.C., area and was presenting at a Federal Aviation Administration workshop in a hotel near the Pentagon on Sept. 11. Several media outlets, including the Argus Leader, covered the presentation. A popular tradition returned! Residents and team members modeled outfits by Go Casual at the Fall Style Show & Luncheon. For an added challenge, try memorizing and saying the twister out loud. Betty Botter had some butter. “But,” she said, “this butter’s bitter.” If I bake this bitter butter, it would make my batter bitter. But a bit of better butter— that would make my batter better. So she bought a bit of butter, better than her bitter butter, and she baked it in her batter, and the batter was not bitter. So ‘twas better Betty Botter bought a bit of better butter. 1,078 sq. ft. 1 Bedroom | Den | 1 Bath For illustration purposes only. Square footage, actual room sizes, and features may vary. 4. 4. Marge Coalman, EdD Vice President of Wellness & Programs I live, because I’m happy “I sing because I’m happy …” – Ci vilia Durfee Martin Last month, this column focused on the happiness research, which is a bit startling and constantly changing. This month, the focus is on what works to make people feel empowered, engaged, and free from as many health/mental/ environmental constraints as possible. Aging brings its own complications—less muscle, reduced energy quotient, elevated (or lowered) blood pressure, financial worries about resources to care for one self and/or spouse for as long as needed, loss of friends and family. The data, though, show that many people are living long and well—even into their 100s. How can that be? Interestingly, the simple answer is “thankfulness.” We focus a lot on the word thankful during this season. One can be thankful in private, but that is only part of the formula for a good quality of life. Thankfulness accelerated by good works and generosity is the key component to the wellness prescription. Picturing fall Even individuals who are physically impaired or cognitively challenged set themselves apart by being part of the solution to the unmet needs of others. The expanded vision of others and good works can empower people who cannot volunteer in traditional ways. Touchmark believes in philanthropy. The Touchmark Foundation is a 501(c)(3) public charity formed by Touchmark in 2002. Its mission is “to enhance the well-being of seniors.” The foundation is dedicated to providing programs to help ensure that seniors have what is necessary to make their lives comfortable, satisfying, and engaging. At this time of year, food boxes are given out at each Touchmark community to help families in need. To be part of Touchmark’s Community Partners and Volunteer efforts, contact a member of the Full Life team. Thank you for caring and sharing.
