  • 1. Meatless Monday
    • An Initiative Organized by the Environmental Club in Partnership with FLIK
  • 2. What is it?
    • Non-profit initiative designed to promote education about meat consumption and its impact on people and the planet.
    • A program where schools and other organizations choose to not serve meat on Mondays, for environmental reasons.
  • 3. Environmental Benefits
    • Your meat consumption accelerates climate change much faster than:
    • driving a car
    • taking a plane
    • or any mode of transportation
  • 4. How Does eating meat affect the environment so negatively?
  • 5. Water Use
    • The water needs of livestock are tremendous , far above those of vegetables or grains.
    • An estimated 1,800 to 2,500 gallons of water go into a single pound of beef.
      • Meatless Mondays help minimize water usage- tofu requires only 220 gallons of water per pound.
  • 6. How much is 2,500 Gallons? = 1 Pound of Beef 2,500 Gallons of Water: = 1 Gallon of Water
  • 7. Fossil Fuels
    • On average, about 40 calories of fossil fuel energy go into every calorie of feed lot beef in the US.

  • 8.
    • On average, about 40 calories of fossil fuel energy go into every calorie of feed-lot beef in the US.
    FOSSIL FUELS
      • Meatless Mondays help reduce fossil fuel dependence- Compare this to the 2.2 calories of fossil fuel energy needed to produce one calorie of plant-based protein.
    2 Cal
  • 9. Methane
    • Cattle produce methane
      • which is 21 times more potent a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide
  • 10. Methane and Fossil Fuels are greenhouse gases that affect Global Climate Change
  • 11. If all Americans went meatless once a week
    • The carbon savings would be the same as taking 19.2 million cars off U.S. roads for a year.
      • They would also produce 99.6 megatons less of greenhouse gas emissions, equivalent to 46 million round trip flights from New York to Los Angeles.
  • 12. The law of 10%
    • The law of 10 percent in ecology:
    • 1 pound of meat is equivalent to 10 pounds of plant matter in an ecosystem. To make one pound of herbivore mass requires 10 pounds of vegetable matter.
  • 13. Personal Health
    • Replacing meat and full fat dairy with foods like vegetable oils, nuts and seeds reduces the risk of heart disease by 19%
    • Consuming beans or peas results in higher intakes of fiber, protein, folate, zinc, iron and magnesium with lower intakes of saturated fat and total fat.
      • Improve your diet without vitamin pills
  • 14. What about my Protein?
    • Do I need to worry about getting enough protein on Meatless Monday?
      • No. USDA statistics show that people are already getting more protein than is recommended – almost double – most of which is generated from meat and other animal sources
  • 15. Other Sources of Protein Beans Tofu Soybeans Dairy
  • 16. Fieldston and Meat
    • In the 4 years you are in high school, Fieldston will have consumed:
      • 19,000-25,000 lbs of beef
      • 32,000-35,000 lbs of chicken
      • 19,000 lbs of pork,
      • and 1,000 lbs of fish.
  • 17. How to Become involved
    • You may not have even noticed that on several Mondays we have already been meatless! Now, we want your approval to make it policy.
    • We definitely want to hear your feedback – this is just as much about Fieldston as the environment
      • Visit the Environmental Club’s website at greenfieldston.com
