Editor's Notes
pixels
folksonomy to taxonomy, knowledge management meets information management.
big picture to pixel - how to relect localised, contextualised data in official taxonomies. how to connect researchers to local need.
Connecting..
localised, community information with official metrics
“The ability, or attempt to make sense of an ambiguous situation”
Not for individuals - this is a social and community initiative. An opportunity for local community to use data in different ways. How many local gov projects provide reports which sit unread from one decade to the next, how does the P and C add context to their ‘my schools data by exposing their rich but UNCLASSIFIED data on school community?
Community is localised, niche, data is general.
How does the local influence the general, how does qualitiative map to quantitative.
When WORLDS COLLIDE.
For this presentation, we focussed on I have, as in the initial stages of this project, this is what we’re looking at.
I am a local PandC, livid at the MySchools portrayal of my school as ‘average’. livid at being directed by numbers.
I tell a story - it’s easier than mapping to taxonomies!
I have primary source data - a video, an excel spreadsheet, a parent survey
All gov depts have taxonomies for metrics. Taxonomies have thesaurus associations.
Emergent reality maps the tags to the taxmonomies. The folksonomy to the taxonomy.
Scans the short desc for keywords.
User can confirm, add or remove.
The taxonomies identify strength of match but also identify where there are links across taxonomies.
For a researcher, there is suddenly a connection across silos linking of datasets.
For a government department, there is a need to discuss.
For a community group, there is advocacy that can be directed towards departments that hae relevant data.
Takes the tag and turns it to the taxonomy.
