    1. ERS and Maths Buddhist Attitudes to the Environment and the use of angles.
    2. Aims of the Lessons:
      • To understand how to use angles to split a circle into eight equal sections.
      • To evaluate the Buddhist attitudes from the 8 fold path and how they could be linked to environmental attitudes
    3. Citizenship Criteria Covered
      • 1b Respect for different religions
      • 2a, b and C Developing skills of enquiry and communication
      • 3a Using imagination to consider other peoples experiences
    4. Starter
      • Can you remember what these terms mean? Extra points if you can remember how to work them out!
      • Radius
      • Circumference
      • Angles
    5. Task 1
      • Using a protractor, compass and a ruler, you should create a large circle split into 8 equal sections on an A3 piece of paper.
      • The steps on the next slide will help you.
      • With your compass, draw a large circle. Try to use as much as the paper as possible.
      • There are 360 ° in a circle
      • To create 8 sections, you need to divide 360 ° by 8.
      • Write your answer down.
      • This number shows how many degrees each section should be.
      • Draw a straight line from the centre spot of your circle to the edge.
      • Place the 0 ° line of your protractor on this line.
      • Now measure the correct number of degrees and mark on the paper.
      • Next join this mark with the centre spot.
      • You should repeat this process until you have 8 equal segments.
    6. Plenary
      • Check someone else’s work by measuring how accurate their angles are.
      • Write a short step by step guide explaining how to complete the circle you have drawn today.
      • Be prepared to share your guide with the rest of the class.
    7. Task 2
      • Comparing the Buddhist 8 Fold Path to the environment
      • Look carefully at the next screen which is a model of the 8 fold path

    9. Task 2 cont.
      • Watch the video that relates the Buddhist’s 8-fold view to the environment.
      • Open the Word document entitled “The 8 Fold Path”
      • Attempt to give examples of what Buddhists should do if they had to adapt the 8 Fold Path to the the protection of the environment.
      • Transfer your ideas to your A3 Wheel / Circle
    10. Teamwork
      • Think carefully about what has to be done
      • Headings in each section e.g. right action
      • Completion of word document
      • Transfer of ideas from word document
      • Images / pictures added to wheel
      • Split the tasks up between you. Don’t all do the same work four times!!!!
    11. Plenary
      • Move around the room and look and other peoples work
      • Compare their answers with yours
      • As a whole class discuss what the different ideas were
