  3. 3. <ul><li>Halloween comes from the Celtic /keltic/ tradition. </li></ul><ul><li>Around this date, the Celts celebrated the end of summer and the beginning of winter. </li></ul><ul><li>This festivitiy was called Samhain . </li></ul>Halloween
  4. 4. <ul><li>The Celts believed the spirits of dead people came alive on this night. </li></ul><ul><li>They built bonfires and wore costumes to send evil spirits and ghosts away. </li></ul>
  5. 5. <ul><li>This Celtic tradition was turned by the Catholic Church into “ All Hollows Eve ” which means the vigil of all Saints. </li></ul><ul><li>This is where the word Halloween comes from. </li></ul>
  6. 6. <ul><li>The Celts used pumpkins to frighten evil spirits. Now, many families carve pumpkins together. They cut a face in it with a knife. They put a candle in the inside to make it light up. </li></ul>
  7. 7. <ul><li>This is called a Jack-o-lantern . They put the Jack-o-lantern in a window so everybody can see it. </li></ul>
  8. 8. <ul><li>Many people also dress up in costumes . </li></ul><ul><li>Costumes can be scary or funny . </li></ul>
  9. 9. <ul><li>Children “ Trick-or-Treat ” in their Halloween costumes to get sweets. </li></ul><ul><li>They go to a door and knock. </li></ul><ul><li>When it opens they scream, </li></ul><ul><li>TRICK OR TREAT ! </li></ul>
