  • Use this compass device to find the magnetic pattern around the magnet. Where does the magnetic effect get concentrated? Magnetic effects are strongest when you cut across the direction of the field – show the direction of the field. Make me a spell in the form of a rhyme so that I can tell people how to find the magnetic flux pattern. • Can you shield something from a magnetic field? Is magnetism like heat or water or radio waves; can it be blocked or held in? Use various materials wrapped around a magnet to see if it reduces its effect on a plotting compass. Magnets get wrapped in plastic. That must be a clue? Try out these materials Paper/card; bubble wrap; kitchen foil; copper sheet; zinc sheet; steel sheet … or anything. • You can make a piece of steel into a magnet by stroking it with a permanent magnet. Try this with a 10 cm nail. Test the strength by finding how many small nails or paperclips the magnetised nail will pick up. See if there is any difference in magnetic strength for 10, 30 or 50 strokes. Only stroke the steel with one pole of a permanent magnet. Only stroke in one direction. Lift the magnet clear at the end of each stroke.
