Three gorges dam Mike pearce 10b geography
What is the three gorges dam?
Mike Pearce: It is the biggest dam in the world, it measures 2,335 metres long and produces mass electricity.
Ashley Ball: The Three Gorges Dam is in China, and at current is the largest in the world. It is seen as an alternative to a coal power station and can reduce carbon emissions big time. It will produce hydro-electric energy which is renewable.
Matt Chappell: The Three Gorges Dam is a hydroelectric river dam that’s cost 180 billion yuan to build (25 billion US dollars)
Where is the three gorges dam?
Mike Pearce: The three gorges dam is in china, chongqing, yangtze river. In order for it to be there they relocated 1 million people.
Zobir Homoyoun: The location of the Three Gorges Dam is in China within the region of Sandouping. The Dam spans the Yangtze river and is well over two kilometres in length.
Liam horler: The Three Gorges Dam on the yangtze River between Chongqing and Wuhan, China. Also the Dam is 2,335 meters long and 115 meters wide.
When was it built and how long how long did it take to build?
Mike Pearce: The construction of the dam started in 1994 and is still waiting for completion. It was meant to be finished in 2009 but due to complications it might not finish until 2011.
Beth Sadgrove: The Three Gorges Dam was started in the 1980’s. It is still being completed at the moment, there are still several generators that still have to be installed within the dam. They are aiming for the dam to be finished in 2009. Because it is such a large dam, it takes a lot of time and effort for it to be complete .
Why was the three gorges dam built?
Mike Pearce: The three gorges dam was built purely to make renewable energy for the most populated country in the world. Mostly though for industrial work.
Megan Pruett: The Three Gorges Dam was built to help power the country with more eco friendly electricity and is a more environmentally friendly way to produce energy. Also enough energy needs to be generated to cover the whole population and the industries.
Dan Joyce: To provide green power for china
What evidence can you find to argue the Dam was a good idea?
Mike Pearce: The dam was a superb idea as it is providing clean renewable energy for china and saving 50 million tonnes of coal every year, witch is what they currently use for energy.
Ashley Pooley: There are several reasons for why the dam should be built. One to make hydroelectricity for the vass population which is continously growing. Then they also built the dam to make clean, renewable energy and not pollute the atmosphere as much. Also to power the industries which China have made their money from. The industries are important because they make all the stuff we wear such as shoes and jewellery.
What evidence can you find to argue against the Dam being built?
Mike Pearce: The dam was a bad idea as it may produce clean air but in the making of the dam it has caused some real damage to the environment. Also a staggering 1 million people had to be relocated due to the demolition of a whole city the size of Birmingham.
Jack Walker: There is a large amount of initial pollution from the cement making process and from the diggers and cranes. Also, many people have been evicted from their homes because of the flooding of the valley.
Ryan Smith: They had to destruct a whole city and move 1 million people to start the dam. And they had to spend alot of money.
