The Three Gorges Dam is in China, and at current is the largest in the world. It is seen as an alternative to a coal power station and can reduce carbon emissions big time. It will produce 22 500 kilowatts of hydro-electric energy which is renewable so will be a great asset to China. It’s located in Chongqing and has used enough steel to re-create the Eiffel tower 63 times.
Where is the ‘Three Gorges Dam’?
It is located on the Yangtze river, Chongqing, in central China. It is the largest in the world stretching across the length of the Yangtze river, and around 2335 miles long.
When was it built and how long did it take?
The Three Gorges Dam was started on the 14th of December in 1994. Now, over 13 years later it is finally flooded, but still not quite complete. Construction is still going on now, and after it was originally planned to finish in 2009, it won’t be completed until 2011 due to lack of resources.
The total construction time should be over 16 years which is a very long time to build a dam like this but I’m sure the power generated will benefit the country be carbon neutral.
Why was the ‘Three Gorges Dam’ Built?
The Three Gorges Dam was built to help create huge amounts of energy in a renewable way. It has created hydro-electric energy for millions, and has cut CO2 emissions on a ginormous scale. It has stopped floods as well around the areas where it was built.
What evidence can you find to argue against the Dam being built?
The Three Gorges Dam was a bad idea as it has cost over 180 billion Yuan (equivalent to 25 billion US Dollars). It has taken over 13 years so far and its not even near finished yet with it scheduled to finish in 2011. In the time it has taken to build, it has produced millions of tons of CO2 due to the levels of concrete it has needed to build so all in all so far as had major negative impacts on our environment.
Building the dam has caused major landslides in which houses have been damaged and also 1.24 millions had to relocate to build this huge project.
What evidence can you find to argue the Dam was a good idea?
The Three Gorges Dam was a good idea as it has created hydro-electric energy on a mass scale. It has cut CO2 emissions, and meant that China has reduced its bills for fossil fuels such as coal. It has replaced a coal plant and will easily provide the same amount of energy while not having the negative environmental impacts as a non-renewable coal plant.
China needs something like this as with over 1/6 of the worlds population electricity is in extreme demand.
