Facebook & Social Change - Presentation Transcript
Final Paper H1I “ Facing up for Social Change” By Mike Bayes
Facing up for Social Change
Times have changed dramatically with how organizations
reach out to recruit or influence the public. Leading this
change is social networking websites that allow
organizations to reach millions of people instantly.
Facebook, a leading social networking site that has soared
to over one hundred seventy-five million users, has
established itself as a major player with new and
established social change organizations.
Facebook was created in 2004 by Mark
Zuckerberg for students at Harvard
University.
With the site now opened to all users over
the age of 13, Facebook has grown to over
175,000,000 registered users.
Facebook has user groups that allow social organizers to
create, promote, and recruit for their cause.
Creating a group on Facebook is very easy. The organizer
can now sit back and watch the friend network spread the
word.
Third-Party applications in Facebook extend the
capabilities. One particular app “Causes” allows you to
accept members and donations towards your cause.
Check out this site to see how one guy generated
donations for a child in need.
Beth Kanter , a
consultant for non-
profit organizations,
in using social
media tools has a
very good Blog
focusing on social
media technologies,
their use and the
ROI.
How do you measure the effectiveness of using Facebook? This is one question that is hard to answer and will depend on the size of the group, the number of technologies used, and the goal being measured.
