In the nineteenth century, Auguste Comte put forward his philosophy of positivism, which claims that the only valid knowledge is knowledge gained through scientific methods. In his Law of Three Stages, Comte placed all human societies in the Theological, Metaphysical, and Positive stages. Comte was one of the first philosophers of science and a pioneer of social science, as well.
