OSM for Wikimedians OSM for Wikimedians Presentation Transcript

  • OpenStreetMapfor Wikimedians[[User:Tom Morris]]en.wikipedia, en.wikinews
  • We’re pretty similar• Founded in 2004• OpenStreetMap Foundation, non-profit UK limited company started in 2006• Freely-licensed geospatial data contributed by a community of volunteers• It’s also enormously addictive
  • Contributing• Get user account• Collect traces with a GPS device with GPX export.• Other formats than GPX can be converted using GPSBabel
  • Town and city• There’s lots that needs doing, but it’s mostly maintenance of existing content (like WP!)• To find things to do, go to the OSM wiki: wiki.openstreetmap.org and type in city – e.g. London.• Metadata improvements, pubs, churches, public toilets, schools, bus stops etc.
  • In the countryside: loads to do!
  • OSMTracker (Android)
  • • Get GPS trace off device• Login• Upload• Wait patiently...• Edit map• Trace• Save• Repeat until barnstar ;-)
  • Why?• OSM now used in Wikipedia apps• Can be reused within Wikimedia projects?• Imagine: Wikiversity? Wikispecies?• Can be used as part of GLAM/ partnership work• Fits within our mission!
  • OpenCycleMap OpenPisteMap
  • Happy mapping. ~~~~ OpenStreetMap tiles are Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike.
