    • THE DONOR MUST BE A VOLUNTEER!!!
    • BRAIN DEATH DONORS may only be determined by a neurosurgeon. (Two in the case of a child)..
    • CARDIAC DEATH is determined by a medical doctor.
    • LIVING DONORS require extensive testing
    • UNDER NO CONDITION CAN THE DETERMINATION BE MADE BY AN EMT, NURSE, OR ANY OTHER PERSON.
  • 4. THERE ARE THREE TYPES OF DONORS:
    • BRAIN DEATH: ORGAN & TISSUES
    • CARDIAC DEATH: TISSUE LIVING DONORS: Kidney, partial pancreas, liver, or lung, blood and bone marrow
  • 5. FEDERAL LAW STATES THAT ONLY TRAINED COUNCELORS OF THE AREA ORGAN PROCUREMENT AGENCY HAS THE AUTHORITY TO SPEAK TO THE FAMILY OF A POTENTIAL DONOR CONCERNING ORGAN DONATION !!!

  • 11. SOME SHOCKING NUMBERS
    • 15,000 = Suitable donors who could have donated 8000 = Suitable donors who actually donated 28,000 = Lives saved by these donors.
    • 7,000 = Suitable donors who did not donate.
    • 6,441 = Lives were lost waiting for an organ
  • 12. NATION WIDE 102,000 Are waiting for an organ 28,000 Received a transplant 6,441 Died waiting for an organ (That is 19 a day)
  • 13. A NATIONAL TRAGEDY!! 7,000 QUALIFIED DONORS DID NOT DONATE. IF 2500 OF THEM HAD DONATED NO ONE WOULD HAVE DIED WAITING FOR AN ORGAN IF ALL HAD DONATED, THE WATING LIST WOULD HAVE BEEN REDUCED BY AT LEAST 20,000.
  • 14. ALL OF THESE DEATHS WERE PREVENTABLE
  • 15. 0 = number of lives we will help save if we are not donors
  • 16. 0 = number of lives lost if only 2,150 more had donated
  • 17. 19 = THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE WHO DIE EACH DAY WAITING FOR AN ORGAN!!!
  • 18. 4% = THE CHANCE THAT YOU WILL NEED A LIFE SAVING ORGAN TRANSPLANT
  • 19. 2% = THE PROBABILITY THAT YOU WILL EVER BECOME AN ORGAN DONOR AND SAVE UP TO 8 LIVES.
  • 20. WHAT CAN YOU DO?
    • Inform your family of your decision to give the gift of life.
    • Sign the back of your driver’s license with a sharpie pen.
    • Register online
    • Death due to failing organs is preventable. Together we erase this tragedy just as we have erased other killing diseases.
  • 21. TOGETHER WE CAN LOWER THE NEEDLESS DEATH RATE FROM 6,441 TO 0 (Death waiting for an organ can be eliminated)
  • 22. DEATH WHILE WAITING FOR AN ORGAN IS PREVENTABLE IF WE WILL ALL DO OUR PART: 1. BECOME AN ORGAN & TISSUE DONOR 2. ENCOURAGE OTHERS TO DO THE SAME. LET’S PUT AN END TO PEOPLE DIEING NEEDLESSLY!!!
