Role of the Police

 1. 1. Dog Squad Tansy – Year 10 Legal Studies
 2. 2. Dog Squad

Formed in 1975

It came apparent that the dog squad was necessary as even in the Middle Ages dogs were used to track down wrong doers.

No technology can come close to the skills and instincts of the dogs in the squad when tracking down hidden people or items.

 3. 3. Training

Members of the dog squad must be good with animals and have practise with the dogs to become familiar with the appropriate way to work with the dogs.

The dogs must be between 12 months and 2 years old when first applying.

They must be either a German Shepherd or Labrador.

They must be skilled in the area of tracking, searching and protecting.

 4. 4. Their Duties

Members of the dog squad have many duties in a number of different situations.

They respond to complaints of intruders on premises, breaking and entering sexual attacks, violence, and lost persons.

They work on appointment basis and come into each unit at a certain time and perform their duties for them specifically.

They search for bombs and do routine checks in places such as schools and train stations.

Most of their support is given to local operation police forces.

 5. 5. Current Activities

Two people were arrested in November in 2009 when they were found in a pet store with several empty puppy pens. The dog squad was called in and found all 17 puppies safely in the back of a third persons car.

Reference

http://www.theage.com.au/national/dog-squad-rescues-17-stolen-puppies-20091118-ikui.html

 6. 6. Current Activities

The dog squad has captured a man after he fled when his cab driver alerted the police that he had a gun in June 2010. He escaped soon after the cab driver stopped at the police station and was captured a short time later after the dog squad was called in.

Reference http://www.theage.com.au/victoria/armed-man-subdued-by-police-dog-20100621-ypls.html

 7. 7. Reasons for the Dog Squad

- The dog squad was formed when it came apparent that no technology could come close to the skills of the dogs and their instincts is key in the police and they can often crawl or jump into places policemen can’t.

 8. 8. Becoming a Police Officer

You first must take a 3 hour entrance exam when trying to become a police officer. If you fail any part of the exam you can resit it.

Once you successfully complete the exam you must submit an application letter and certain information they require.

When considering you they check your history and take into account your criminal record. This stage can take a number of weeks and this is when they may disqualify you if you are irresponsible.

 9. 9. Becoming a Police Officer

A medical assessment is then performed to see if you are healthy enough to become a police officer. This also takes into account the mental health of the applicant. They also monitor if you take any drugs and must be immunised appropriately.

The applicants are then subjected to a fitness test all applicants regardless of gender and age must meet the same standards.

 10. 10. Becoming a Police Officer

After completing all fitness and mental tests you may be asked to stand before a panel. They ask you a series of questions and must achieve a required minimum standard for all questions.

After going before the panel you are subjected to a final assessment which looks over how suitable you are for the job.

If you complete all the above areas you will then be accepted into the Victorian Police Academy. You may have to wait as the number of applicants exceeds their vacancies.

 11. 11. Article 1: Bomb and Arson Squad

The bomb squad was called on the 3 rd of February 2011 and cordoned of a street as a man had barricaded himself in his home. They suspected that the man had illegal items in his possession and when the man finally gave himself up they returned with a search warrant and found suspect items and devices.
