3. WHO IS A CHAIRPERSON?
The board is a collective decision making body. In
other words, even though individual preferences are
expressed, eventually the collective wisdom of a body
of individuals prevails. The principle behind forming
and making decisions through board is to ensure that
the experience and expertise of individual members
can be collated and assimilated.
4. THE ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
OF A CHAIRPERSON
To ensure the board functions properly:
To
plan and run meetings in accordance with the
organization’s governing document.
To facilitate change and address conflict within the
board.
5. To ensure the organization is managed effectively.
To co-ordinate various sub-committees of the board
e.g. Finance, Personnel etc,
To be involved with the strategic planning of events
and ensure that all activities are in accordance with
the organization's vision & mission.
6. Provide support and supervision to staff.
To manage the senior staff members of the
organization.
To sit on appointment and important decisions of
the organization, as and when required.
7. Represent the organization.
To
communicate effectively the vision and purpose
of the organization.
To advocate for and represent the organization in
external meetings and events.
To be aware of the changes in the external
environment that can have affect on the
organization.
8. THE ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
OF A VICE- CHAIRPERSON
Generally, the Vice‐chairperson serves on the Executive Com
mittee or any special Committee of the Board along with the
Chairperson
To carry out certain special tasks as delegated by the Chairperson
To substitute the Chair in his/her absence which includes, c
hairing meetings and performing any other Legislative/Execu
tive role performed by the Chairperson
To support the Chair in conducting meetings in an orderly
and organized manner is another big responsibility entrusted u
pon him/her and is expected to maintain a healthy relationship
with the Chair and other Board members.
9. THE ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
OF SECRETARY
Although, the job responsibilities of Secretary vary
from organization to organization, some basic roles and
responsibilities which are common are below:
