Background • More and more intelligent devices with communication capabilities around us • Many devices depend on the Internet connectivity • Multiple cases exist where the “implementation” of the end- user use-case needs co-operation of multiple physical devices found in the local context and in the Internet • No unified thinking and concept behind such use-cases • Virtual Device concept developed in the DIEM IOP WP targeted to address this issue • NoTA based Service Oriented approach is an excellent enabler for the developed VD concept25.5.2011 3

Network on Terminal Architecture (NoTA)• NoTA is the only existing Service Oriented architecture solution scaling from on-chip via off-chip and inter-device to the Internet.• Developed by Nokia – specification and reference implementation opened 2009.• Supports any wireless and wired communication technologies.• NoTA devices consist of modules that can be independently specified, verified and tested.• Three entities: Service Nodes (SN), Application Nodes (AN) and the Interconnect (IN).25.5.2011 4

Virtual Device Concept• Virtual Devices implement end-user services relating to a specific context.• Spans typically over multiple physical devices both in the local and the Internet domains.• Access rights management on the VD level.• VDs are identified by a Virtual Device ID (VD_ID) together with XML based description.• In NoTA case a single VD is span by one RM:SN.25.5.2011 5

VD Service Discovery Framework• Supports heterogeneous service domains – ZeroConf, UPnP, NoTA, Bluetooth, USB etc.• Based on Service & Connectivity Map with known inter- domain ontology25.5.2011 6

VD Applications• VD applications are typically service mash-ups where a single service may locate in any physical device (local, remote).• VD applications typically evolve (new features, more intelligence).
