Jesus our sacrifice

 1. 1. Jesus, our sacrifice
 2. 2. Genesis 22:1-20

(1) And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, [here] I [am].

(2) And he said, Take now thy son, thine only [son] Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.

(3) And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him.

(4) Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off.

(5) And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you.

 3. 3.

(6) And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid [it] upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife; and they went both of them together.

(7) And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here [am] I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where [is] the lamb for a burnt offering?

(8) And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.

(9) And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood.

(10) And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son.

 4. 4.

(11) And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here [am] I.

(12) And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only [son] from me.

(13) And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind [him] a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son.

(14) And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovahjireh: as it is said [to] this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.

(15) And the angel of the LORD called unto Abraham out of heaven the second time,

 5. 5.

(16) And said, By myself have I sworn, saith the LORD, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only [son]:

(17) That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which [is] upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies;

(18) And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.

(19) So Abraham returned unto his young men, and they rose up and went together to Beersheba; and Abraham dwelt at Beersheba.

(20) And it came to pass after these things, that it was told Abraham, saying, Behold, Milcah, she hath also born children unto thy brother Nahor;

 6. 6.

Genesis 22:14 And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovahjireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.

Abraham called this place Jehovahjireh.

Meaning “The Lord provides.”

Why and what is it, that we need to see here?

 7. 7. Abraham is called to give his only son.

God gave his Only Son. (John 3:16)

(16) For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

 8. 8. Abraham saddles a donkey to go to the hill. Vs 3

Jesus rides a donkey a few days before on his way to Calvary. (Matt 21:5) (5) Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass.

 9. 9. Abraham and Isaac went up the hill alone. Vs 5-6

Jesus went up that hill with only His Father with him.

 10. 10. Abraham declared that he and Isaac would return.

Jesus declared that if He went away He would return.

John 14:1-2 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.

(2) In my Father's house are many mansions: if [it were] not [so], I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.

 11. 11. Abraham found the place after three days.

Jesus was in the earth three days and three nights.

Matthew 12:40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

 12. 12. Abraham laid the wood on his son.

God laid the wood on His Son.

Isaiah 53:6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

 13. 13. Abraham said God would provide HIMSELF a lamb for the burnt offering.

Jesus was God's Lamb.

John 1:29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

 14. 14. Abraham bound Isaac. Isaac was willing. He could have fought his dad but did not. He trusted him.

God put Jesus on that cross. Jesus could have resisted but did not. (not my will but thine be done)

Isaiah 53:7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.

 15. 15. God gave Abraham a full grown ram instead of a lamb.

Jesus was a full grown man, not a baby in a manger.

 16. 16. The ram was caught in a thicket by his horns.

Jesus wore a crown of thorns.

Mark 15:17 And they clothed him with purple, and platted a crown of thorns, and put it about his [head],

 17. 17. Abraham, the father, offered the sacrifice, not Isaac.

Again, it was God who offered Jesus as a sacrifice.

2 Corinthians 5:21 For he hath made him [to be] sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

 18. 18. After the sacrifice of the ram, we do not see Isaac again until he is taking his bride Rebekkah.

After Calvary, we do not see Jesus again until he is returning to get His bride.

 19. 19. What do we see as we approach Mount Calvary?

We see a Father who gave his Only son.

We see a willing Son to die trusting his Father.

We see a Son who after worshipping with His Father, He is given a bride.

We see the love of God and His great Love for His Son.

We see God laying our sins on Him, that we might be made the righteousness of Christ.

What a Father! What a Saviour! What great love!
