  • 1. How to use what God has given you… A sermon series
  • 2. Jack Whittaker is Broke!
    • CHARLESTON, W.Va.
    • Whittaker Claims He's Broke
    • At one time, he won the biggest powerball jackpot ever. But now, is Jack Whittaker out of money? Whittaker claims thieves took almost all of his money.
    • Whittaker Claims He's Broke
  • 3. His perils…
    • According to Wikipedia.com:
    • He won the jackpot and took home the payment of $113 MILLION.
    • After he pledged 10% to some churches in Southern WV, he was robbed at a strip club when he had $545,000 stolen from his truck.
  • 4.
    • His house has been broken into
    • Another time a thief got $100,000 that was in his vehicle.
    • He has been arrested for drunk driving, misdemeanor assault.
    • He has been sued by casinos in NJ
    • And lost his Granddaughter in what appears to be a drug related murder.
    • He has been sued by others.
    • And now claims that thieves made off with the rest of his money from National City Corp. in Charleston.
  • 5.
    • How can someone go through
    • $113,000,000
    • In only 4 yrs?
    • Even if you gave $11,300,000 (10%) to the church…
    • You would still have around $102,000,000 left to live off of for the rest of your life…
    • You could spend $1 million a year for over 100 yrs!!
  • 6. While none of us will probably ever see that kind of money
    • We still can learn some lessons here…
    • God expects us to be good stewards of what we have!
  • 7. Text for today… Luke 16:1-10
    • (1) And he said also unto his disciples, There was a certain rich man, which had a steward; and the same was accused unto him that he had wasted his goods.
    • (2) And he called him, and said unto him, How is it that I hear this of thee? give an account of thy stewardship; for thou mayest be no longer steward.
    • (3) Then the steward said within himself, What shall I do? for my lord taketh away from me the stewardship: I cannot dig; to beg I am ashamed.
    • (4) I am resolved what to do, that, when I am put out of the stewardship, they may receive me into their houses.
    • (5) So he called every one of his lord's debtors [unto him], and said unto the first, How much owest thou unto my lord?
  • 8.
    • (6) And he said, An hundred measures of oil. And he said unto him, Take thy bill, and sit down quickly, and write fifty.
    • (7) Then said he to another, And how much owest thou? And he said, An hundred measures of wheat. And he said unto him, Take thy bill, and write fourscore.
    • (8) And the lord commended the unjust steward, because he had done wisely: for the children of this world are in their generation wiser than the children of light.
    • (9) And I say unto you, Make to yourselves friends of the mammon of unrighteousness; that, when ye fail, they may receive you into everlasting habitations.
    • (10) He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much.
  • 9. This one seems hard to explain
    • On the surface it seems that the Lord is saying we should be dishonest to get ahead… But that can’t be.
    • So we dig a little deeper…
  • 10. The explanation:
    • A crooked steward (manager) is confronted by his boss, and is told that he is going to lose his job.
    • He decides he must do something, because he cannot do manual labor, and will not beg.
    • He devises a plan that appears to cheat his boss, and make friends of his bosses debtors.
    • He calls the debtors in, and reduces what they owe.
    • The owner finds out about what he is doing, and keeps him on as manager!
    • He compliments the steward for being crafty
    • Jesus then tells in the parable that we should do likewise, “Make to yourselves friends of the mammon of unrighteousness;”
    • What? Does this seem right?
  • 11. A little deeper…
    • Some things to keep in mind:
    • The crafty steward was thinking about his future…
    • He got his owner 50-80% of what was owed… That had he not reduced the amount, the debtors may have not been able to pay.
    • He had a plan and stuck to it.
    • His plan improved his present situation.
    • The owner made money.
    • The steward proved that he was smart enough to be manager
    • But why did Jesus compliment this crafty guy
    • The key is in verse 8:
    • (8) And the lord commended the unjust steward, because he had done wisely: for the children of this world are in their generation wiser than the children of light.
  • 12. A comparison
    • Children of this world
    • They think of their future…..
    • They know how to do well for themselves
    • They can improve their present situation
    • Children of light
    • We tend to forget we have a future…
    • We have trouble balancing ourselves and others
    • We tend to wait to long, hoping Jesus will do it for us.
  • 13. We need to learn to use what God has given us to serve Him and improve us.
    • He has given us:
    • Time
    • Treasures
    • Talents
    • And a Testimony
  • 14. For the next 4 weeks we will be looking at each of these…
    • How to use your time to please God
    • How to use your treasure to please God
    • How to use your talents to please God
    • How to use your testimony to please God.
    • Today, I will give you a brief overview of each one….
  • 15. Some stewardship principles that apply to each one:
    • 1) We are not owners
    • 2) We give account to God
    • 3) When we are faithFul in little- We will get more responsibility
  • 16. Time
    • 1) We are only given so much time: we don't own time.
    • 2) We will give account on how we spend our time.
    • 3) God will stretch time when we are good stewards.
    • Psalms 90:10 The days of our years [are] threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength [they be] fourscore years, yet [is] their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.
    • Hebrews 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:
  • 17. Treasure
    • 1) We don't own anything – we only Get to use.
    • 2) We will have to answer how we use our finances.
    • 3) If you are faithful in small amounts, God will trust you with more
    • Malachi 3:8-10) Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings.
    • (9) Ye [are] cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, [even] this whole nation.
    • (10) Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that [there shall] not [be room] enough [to receive it].
  • 18. Talents
    • 1) Our gifts come from God.
    • 2) We will give an account.
    • 3) When we use our gifts, God gives us bigger and better to do for him.
    • Romans 12:6 Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, [let us prophesy] according to the proportion of faith;
    • 1 Corinthians 12:18 But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him.
    • Luke 16:(10) He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much.
  • 19. Testimony
    • 1) Our life is not our own.
    • 2) We need to guard our testimony.
    • 3) When we care about our testimony, God will give us more influence.
    • 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost [which is] in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
    • (20) For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.
    • Matthew 5:16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
  • 20. Are you using what God has given you?
    • If not Why?
    • Do you not know how to use them?
    • Do not trust God that He will take care of you?
    • Will you today, make a decision to live for God and not for yourself?
