How to satisfy your thirst for God How to satisfy your thirst for God Presentation Transcript

  • How to Satisfy your thirst for God Isaiah 55
  •
  • A man in the desert
    • He is thirsty, dying of thirst..
    • He thinks he has found water…
    • He kneels down…
    • Takes a hand full…
    • It is only sand…
  • Life is like that…
    • We are created to desire God (living Water)
    • Many are seeking to satisfy that thirst…
    • But all they have found so far is sand…
    • The mirage of sex, drugs, alcohol, money, power, other religions..
  • In our text today, God tells us how to satisfy our thirst…
    • Isaiah 55:1-13 NIV
    • (1) Come all you who are thirsty,
    • come to the waters;
    • and you who have no money,
    • come, buy and eat!
    • Come, buy wine and milk
    • without money and without cost.
    • (2) Why spend money on what is not bread,
    • and your labor on what does not satisfy?
    • Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good,
    • and your soul will delight in the richest of fare.
    • (3) Give ear and come to me;
    • hear me, that your soul may live.
    • I will make an everlasting covenant with you,
    • my faithful love promised to David.
    • (4) See, I have made him a witness to the peoples,
    • a leader and commander of the peoples.
    • (5) Surely you will summon nations you know not,
    • and nations that do not know you will hasten to you,
    • because of the LORD your God,
    • the Holy One of Israel,
    • for he has endowed you with splendor."
    • (6) Seek the LORD while he may be found;
    • call on him while he is near.
    • (7) Let the wicked forsake his way
    • and the evil man his thoughts.
    • Let him turn to the LORD, and he will have mercy on him,
    • and to our God, for he will freely pardon.
    • (8) "For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
    • neither are your ways my ways,"
    • declares the LORD.
    • (9) "As the heavens are higher than the earth,
    • so are my ways higher than your ways
    • and my thoughts than your thoughts.
    • (10) As the rain and the snow
    • come down from heaven,
    • and do not return to it
    • without watering the earth
    • and making it bud and flourish,
    • so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater,
    • (11) so is my word that goes out from my mouth:
    • It will not return to me empty,
    • but will accomplish what I desire
    • and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.
    • (12) You will go out in joy
    • and be led forth in peace;
    • the mountains and hills
    • will burst into song before you,
    • and all the trees of the field
    • will clap their hands.
    • (13) Instead of the thornbush will grow the pine tree,
    • and instead of briers the myrtle will grow.
    • This will be for the LORD's renown,
    • for an everlasting sign,
    • which will not be destroyed."
  • Come
    • (1) all you who are thirsty,
    • come to the waters;
    • and you who have no money,
    • come, buy and eat!
    • Come, buy wine and milk
    • without money and without cost.
    • (2a) Why spend money on what is not bread,
    • and your labor on what does not satisfy?
  • First, to satisfy your thirst, you must come to God…
    • C God for who He is
    • O mit the idea that you can cure your own thirst
    • Quit trying to find love in all the wrong places…
    • M eekness in Spirit
    • E xperience God
    • Recognize the fact that God wants you to come to HIM!
  • Listen and Hear
    • (2b) Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and your soul will delight in the richest of fare.
    • (3) Give ear and come to me;
    • hear me, that your soul may live.
    • I will make an everlasting covenant with you,
    • my faithful love promised to David.
  • Just don’t listen, but hear
    • To the 7 Churches in Rev. Christ said…
    • “ He that has an ear, let him hear…”
    • And then, John re-emphasizes it in Revelation 13:9
    • (9) If any man have an ear, let him hear.
    • Too many people say they are listening, but are they actually hearing God
    • Do you take the time to hear God?
  • See
    • (4) See, I have made him a witness to the peoples,
    • a leader and commander of the peoples.
    • (5) Surely you will summon nations you know not,
    • and nations that do not know you will hasten to you,
    • because of the LORD your God,
    • the Holy One of Israel,
    • for he has endowed you with splendor."
  • Pay attention to what is going on around you
    • Watch God work in His world
    • World affairs (Specifically the mid-east)
    • Your community
    • Your church…
    • Your friends
    • Your family
    • YOU
  • Seek and Repent
    • (6) Seek the LORD while he may be found;
    • call on him while he is near.
    • (7) Let the wicked forsake his way
    • and the evil man his thoughts.
    • Let him turn to the LORD, and he will have mercy on him,
    • and to our God, for he will freely pardon.
  • Ask, seek, and knock
    • (Mat 7:7) Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:
    • Seeking is a little bit more involved than asking…
    • seeking implies actively looking for something…
    • In Other Words, don’t just ask… seek!
  • Also repent..
    • (7) Let the wicked forsake his way and the evil man his thoughts.
    • Let him turn to the LORD, and he will have mercy on him, and to our God, for he will freely pardon.
    • Too many want Christ with no repentance… It doesn’t work that way.
  • Think
    • (8) "For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
    • neither are your ways my ways,"
    • declares the LORD.
    • (9) "As the heavens are higher than the earth,
    • so are my ways higher than your ways
    • and my thoughts than your thoughts.
  • Control your thoughts, keep them on Christ…
    • Heb 3:1
    • Therefore, holy brothers, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, the apostle and high priest whom we confess.
  • Trust
    • (10) As the rain and the snow
    • come down from heaven,
    • and do not return to it
    • without watering the earth
    • and making it bud and flourish,
    • so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater,
    • (11) so is my word that goes out from my mouth:
    • It will not return to me empty,
    • but will accomplish what I desire
    • and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.
  • Trust what God says will happen, will happen
    • When God says something, it will not come back void, but will accomplish his purpose…
    • …but recognize His purpose may not match YOUR purpose..
    • What do you do when this happens?
    • You have to trust HIM that He knows what He is doing
  • Go and be satisfied
    • (12) You will go out in joy
    • and be led forth in peace;
  • Don’t just sit around and whine about being thirsty..
    • GO… get active, and put these principles to use… when you do you will have
    • In Verse 12: joy, peace, rejoicing,
    • In Verse 13: new life, everlasting protection, and life
