  • 3. Huff Darnell Darnell Huff, winner of this year’s Senator William V. Roth, Jr. Achievement Award, is not someone you’re likely to forget. Suffering from Mental Retardation and Adjustment Disorder, Darnell has faced many challenges in his life including unstable housing, financial worries and behavior issues. In 1992, Darnell was referred to Goodwill and enrolled in the Retail Skills Training Program. After successfully completing his training at Goodwill, Darnell was employed as a Retail Clerk in the New Castle store in September of that year. During that time, Darnell faced 2007 Senator William V. Roth, Jr. and overcame many challenges…but eventually found Achievement Award his stride…as well as family stability with his foster mother and her children. Now, after 16 years, Darnell is still employed at Goodwill – as a production associate in the Fox Run store in Bear. A fixture in the store, Darnell takes the time to greet customers every day - putting smiles on their faces – and the faces of his fellow co-workers. His consistent work abilities, flexibility and remarkable, infectious personality make him an instant favorite with everyone he meets. Today, through his training and work at Goodwill, Darnell has established his independence – able to make his own decisions and take charge of his own resources - and is a living testament to the life- changing power of work. • 6. Lawanda Lucas, recipient of this year’s Personal Achievement Award, has a warm smile that is reflected Lucas Lawanda in her eyes. Born with a learning disability which prevents her from performing complex tasks, Lawanda struggled for many years with the frustration of maintaining a steady job. In March of 2003, Lawanda was referred to Goodwill and enrolled in the Work Adjustment Training Program. During her training, Lawanda was able to learn and retain basic janitorial assignments. Each and every day, she would challenge herself to not only do what was asked…but to exceed what was expected of her. After completing the program in June 2003, Lawanda was hired by Goodwill in the Gateway Store in Dover. 2007 Personal Achievement Award For the past five years, Lawanda has continued to work for Goodwill. She has blossomed with increased confidence and self-esteem. She has been a perfect employee – rarely missing a day – and she enjoys her janitorial work because she likes to stay busy and keep things clean. Over the years, Lawanda has excelled because she is determined to succeed. Even through difficult times including knee surgery and the recent loss of her grandmother, Lawanda has soared. She is hardly ever without a smile now… and the light reflected in her eyes lightens the hearts of the people around her. Lawanda’s simple dedication and drive to succeed is an inspiring testament to the impact of the Goodwill mission and the empowerment of the human spirit. Goodwill of Delaware and Delaware County 7
  • 7. Kane Gerald Gerald Kane, this year’s Graduate of the Year, was truly a man down on his luck. In addition to a visual disability, some legal troubles in 1994 prevented him from finding decent employment. With no family to rely on, Gerald struggled with homelessness and hopelessness. In September of 2006, Gerald found Goodwill. He enrolled in the ShopRite Training Program and, after completing training the following month with exceptional test scores, Gerald was placed at ShopRite as a cashier. Even though he continued to live outside for a time– Gerald never missed a day of work. It was difficult for him 2007 Graduate of the Year but with the help of Goodwill, he found a place in a homeless shelter and, finally, a place to call home. Throughout his turmoil, Gerald went to work and gave 100% each and every day – which eventually landed him a promotion to a Maintenance position - a position more suited to his interests and experience. With the help of Goodwill, Gerald has put hopelessness behind him and emerged a new person – with a smile on his face and a skip in his step. Gerald is a prime example of a story that is all too common in today’s world – but his determination to overcome his barriers and focus on the future make him an inspiration to all – and a compelling example of the Goodwill mission at work.
