Context <ul><li>My Students </li></ul><ul><li>Chinese background – ABC/new migrants. </li></ul><ul><li>Diverse language skills and levels. </li></ul><ul><li>Parents speaking different dialects. </li></ul><ul><li>Day school year levels from year 6 to year 8. </li></ul><ul><li>My Area of Investigation </li></ul><ul><li>To investigate the adequacy of ICT as an integrated tool for </li></ul><ul><li>intercultural Chinese language learning and teaching. </li></ul><ul><li>To evaluate the effectiveness of ICT for stimulating students’ </li></ul><ul><li>interest in engaging in intercultural communication. </li></ul>

What did I do? <ul><li>Designed a Movie Making Project (MMP). </li></ul><ul><li>- Based on Lesson 12 A Small Soccer Match in our textbook. </li></ul><ul><li>- With the aim of fostering purposeful language use. </li></ul><ul><li>Encouraged each student to produce a short film of our </li></ul><ul><li>class soccer match, with Chinese commentary and English </li></ul><ul><li>subtitles. </li></ul><ul><li>- Involving connections across texts and contexts, interaction with others, and </li></ul><ul><li>negotiation of a meeting point between two cultures. </li></ul><ul><li>Assessed each completed movie and provided </li></ul><ul><li>comprehensible and accurate feedback. </li></ul>
  5. 6. <ul><li>Held an Award Presentation, at which four awards </li></ul><ul><li>were presented (Panda Award). </li></ul><ul><li>- Best Sound Editing; Best Film Editing; </li></ul><ul><li>- Best English Subtitles; Best Commentary </li></ul><ul><li>Asked students to complete the Feedback Questionnaire </li></ul><ul><li>for MMP. </li></ul><ul><li>- Promoting critical reflection on intercultural Chinese language learning and teaching . </li></ul>What did I do? What did I learn? <ul><li>Connection to the principles for intercultural language learning – Active construction, Making connections, Social interaction, Reflection and Responsibility </li></ul><ul><li>(http://www.asiaeducation.edu.au/alplp/pdf/ph2ptpt.pdf) . </li></ul><ul><li>MMP did make learning purposeful, active, interactive and challenging. </li></ul><ul><li>MMP did support critical reflection on intercultural Chinese language learning </li></ul><ul><li>and teaching. </li></ul><ul><li>MMP did encourage my students to take responsibility for their own learning. </li></ul><ul><li>MMP did involve the stages of awareness-raising, experimentation, production </li></ul><ul><li>and feedback. </li></ul><ul><li>MMP did inspire me to further explore the magic power of ICT as a stimulating </li></ul><ul><li>tool for intercultural Chinese language learning . </li></ul>

(Cont.) <ul><li>Connection to the Profession Standards </li></ul><ul><li>Language pedagogy </li></ul><ul><li>- Technology for language learning and communication </li></ul><ul><li>The success of MMP has proved that, </li></ul><ul><li>‘ ICT has the potential to change the way children learn language, learn about </li></ul><ul><li>language and learn to use language; as well as the potential to actually </li></ul><ul><li>construct the learning that children experience’ (PSP 2008 Module 5, p24). </li></ul><ul><li>By creating ICT learning opportunities, I can ‘identify and connect with </li></ul><ul><li>students’ life worlds to enhance their meaningful engagement with language </li></ul><ul><li>learning’ (PSP 2008 Module 5, p24). </li></ul>
