• N The first ios to use the complaining – challenge it – if staff are experts on problems then cultivate their expertise Either help or empower staff to analyse their own problems or use outsiders
• T Offer people the choice. “ Tell me how awful it is or sell me the problem eg quantify – costs and options and give me your best shot at solving it! “
• We have all sorts of approaches
• N For instance we have spent years hearing people complain about college meetings
• T That was one example – meetings but In our experience it is not difficult to move staff and managers from negative to productive across the board
• These are just some of the 70 projects staff and first line managers worked on in one college in one year
• NICKY It ’s almost starting from challenging people to evaluate the problem – what’s the damage, what’s the impact. This starts from the position of listening. Which immediately improves communication and trust. It also enables your complaining staff to take ownership and to be the real expert of the problem, but also to research and find the solution
• N
• T Task How many good ideas do you come up with as part of your work in a month? Don ’t forget the key points Ratio of winning ideas likely to save money to total ideas your staff are likely to come up with 1:20, 1:50, 1:100??? Total number of staff Average number of good ideas a year each staff member might have
• As we have said – good ideas are not enough Point – cant afford to pass up on opportunities to not just gather ideas but also sort them
• But we know that is not enough
• We have been developing award-winning software for organisations to be systematic – not just with creativity but what comes next
• We use it to help people come up with ideas
• But we also use it to help organisations like John Lewis Waitrose think about next steps – and bring together not just the creative types bit the analytic types who will analsye the ideas and evaluate them
• People need parameters to evaluate ideas and our ideas can be adpated
• Nicky This is our 3 rd solution
• Its about helping the people who have good ideas that are evaluated as potebtial winners and now have toi pilot them
• They need guidance not only about making the case
• But also managing a pilot project
• Midwife story

• T The model is simple and prevents aimless innovation

• Especially the one sthat have been around for ages – maybe now is the time to address them

12. 16. TASK Calculate the potential resource for improvement and innovation in your college
13. 17. An idea not coupled with action will never get any bigger than the brain cell it occupied . ~Arnold H. Glasgow
14. 18. Creativity is thinking up new things. Innovation is doing new things."
— American economist Theodore Levitt (1925-2006)
15. 19. Piloting Project-managing 2. Supporting the trying out of the promising ideas Stimulating Collecting/Incubating 1. Encouraging the search for Inventing better ways of doing things Appraising Turning creativity into innovation Working with groups of willing and creative practitioners to generate ideas for new courses and services, and for improving services and for cutting waste. Helping practitioners to develop, refine and work up the more viable ideas into simple costed proposals Creating a group of analytical people to appraise proposals and recommend those that need piloting Creating a strong pilot plan that takes account of stakeholders, resources and risks; a plan that takes on measurment and focuses on small cycles of change Ensuring that the pilot is well-run, often with coaching or mentoring for the project leader and has a senior champion to oversee it. Problem-managing when the plan no longer works.
16. 20. What we have learnt from supporting innovation in organisations…….any system needs three components
17. 21. Idea generation
18. 22. Evaluation of worked up ideas
19. 23. Especially financial
20. 24. Emerging solution 3 – Have champions, mentors and coaches to support disciplined piloting of ideas
21. 25. "The goal of coaching is the goal of good management: to make the most of an organization's valuable resources." -- HARVARD BUSINESS REVIEW
22. 30. Setting aims for pilot Establishing measures Selecting changes to try Testing small -scale changes Test what works on larger scale Spread across college The core discipline behind improvement and innovation

24. 32. “ … Here is Edward Bear, coming downstairs now, bump, bump, bump, on the back of his head, behind Christopher Robin. It is, as far as he knows, the only way of coming downstairs, but sometimes he feels that there really is another way, if only he could stop bumping for a moment and think of it .… “
