Have you ever wondered how friction ridge skin is formed and how it is truly unique in
itself? My essay will explain this, and it will be an educational and exciting journey.
2. Fingerprints Classification and Latent’s 11 - 4 2
Formation of Friction Ridge Skin and Permanence.
The beginning of friction ridge skin starts before we are born, while we are still in our
mother’s womb. Usually about the fourth month of our development, we begin to generate
friction ridge skin on our fingers. Friction ridge skin after it has developed remains unchanged
from this time until we expire into death. Aside from burns, scars caused by injury throughout
our lives friction ridge skin remains the same. Each individual has his or her own uniqueness,
individuality, d characteristics. Nature never repeats itself, and even on trees, leaves from an oak
tree for example are unique in themselves, no two leaves are exactly alike. (2005. Author
Unknown. “World of Forensic Science.)
There is scientific foundation that demonstrates that fingerprint ridges are unchanging
and are permanent. One historical figure demonstrated the permanence of friction ridge skin in a
study that lasted for 34 years. Herman Welcker-(1856-1897) and others like, Sir William
Herschel, observed that fingerprint ridges were unchanging. The earliest record of fingerprints
being used for personal identification dates back to 650 A.D. China where fingerprints were used
as identification on contracts. (2004. Leo-, William. “Fingerprint Identification, Criminal
Investigation Series.”) In 1999, Lockheed-Martin working with the FBI (Federal Bureau of
Investigations) conducted a computerized statistic checking fifty thousand fingerprints against
themselves, and the study concluded that just four like characteristics occupying the same
positions in two different prints was beyond the population that lives on the earth. Moreover
much of the documented research that took place during the turn of the century were published
and instantiated.
