Our media product is a teen drama that incorporates gang culture, similar to films like Kidulthood and Green Street. It represents stereotypical views of hooded teenage boys as intimidating and aggressive. The audience for our product would be 14-25 year olds, as our survey found they were most interested in films about youth gangs. We learned how to better use filming equipment and editing software in the process of constructing the product. From the preliminary task to the full product, we gained experience working together in a group and using tools like the blog site.
2. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms
and conventions of real media products?
Teen dramas focus on the dramatic side of teenagers lives,
following them through rocky relationships and friendships and
the different types of pressure they are under as teenagers. Our
product, which was a teen drama incorporates a gang culture
much like all the films used in our opening sequence analysis on
the blog. ( Kidulthood, Adulthood, Green street, Stomp the yard )
The films used in our opening sequence were gang-related so
they Had similar conventions as our one but after doing some
research I discovered most popular teen dramas are set in affluent
areas In America with the exception of skins. ( e.g. One Tree hill,
90210, Dawson's creek)
3. How does your media product represent particular social groups?
• Our opening sequence shows a typical stereotypical view of a group
of hooded teenage youths. Usually in society there seen to be
intimidating and aggressive which they are in our opening sequence.
They are shown attacking another boy in a group, all the boys are
black and in society and the media black boys that dress in this way
are usually conveyed as criminals. The location is also Important, its
in a quite secluded area suggesting perhaps they were waiting for a
victim to attack
4. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and
why?
The media products in our opening sequence were similair to our media
product so to determine the type of media institution that would
distribute our media product I looked at the distributors of the
following
Adulthood - Pathé Pictures International
Stomp the yard - Screen Gems
Kidulthood- revolver entertainment
Green street - Universal Pictures(UK)
- Freestyle Releasing (US)
According to this information, because our media product is most
familiar to adulthood and kidulthood it would be likely that pathé
pictures international and revolver entertainment would distribute
our product.
5. Who would be the audience for your media product?
Our audience would be 14-25 year olds. According to our questionairre
the majority of the 14-25 year olds asked said they would watch a film
based on youth gangs and suprisingly more girls than boys said yes to
this.
6. How did you attract/address your audience?
We approached our target audience which was 14-25 year olds with
a questionnaire and a survey to see there prefences, what film
genres they liked whether they visited the cinema, if they were male
or female, there ethnic background and so on. We done this to get a
more precise intake on our target audience. The questionnaire was
general whereas the survey was carried out by showing them a short
scene from ‘green street 2’ and later asking them questions about
this. We wanted to know there likes and dislikes so we could apply
this to our media product.
7. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of
constructing this product?
During the filming process I learnt how to better use the filming
equipment (Tripod, fish pole camera, boom pole, microphone and
headphones). I also learnt how to use final cut and edit my scenes to
make the media product. I learnt how to do titling on final cut and
for my audio during the titling I recorded the sound of a keyboard
with Edi roll.
8. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt
in the progression it to the full product?
When I started the preliminary task me as well as every one else was
new to everything so by the time it got to the second task I was more
familiar with how to do everything such as how to use the blogsite
(wordpress) and how to work more harmoniously in a group by
completing large tasks together and setting smaller ones to group
members to do alone.
