  • 1. Searching MeLCat The Statewide catalog for Michigan residents
  • 2. MeLCat
    • Libraries from all over the state…
      • Public Libraries
      • University and College Libraries
    • Books delivered to your home library
    • Available to Hackley Public Library and Muskegon Area District Library patrons
  • 3. Remember…
    • Always check the Lakeland Library Catalog First!
  • 4. Use MeLCat when there are no items in the Lakeland Catalog
  • 5. Clicking on the MeLCat logo takes you to MelCat!
  • 6. You’ll get a list of matching titles
  • 7. Clicking on a title will take you to a description of the book and where it lives
  • 8. Clicking on “Get this for me” will start the process for requesting the book
  • 9. First, choose your library…
  • 10. It matters where your home library is
    • If you have a Hackley Card choose Hackley Library
    • If you have a Muskegon Area District Card (Yellow), choose Muskegon Area District Library
    • You will have to have the book sent to your “home” library…either Hackley or one of the MADL libraries, depending on your card. MeL can not send a MADL patron’s book to Hackley or a Hackley patron’s book to a MADL branch (Norton Shores or North Muskegon, for example).
  • 11. Enter your personal information Name, Barcode, Pin (last 4 digits of your phone number)
  • 12. Choose your pickup location if you are a Muskegon Area District Library Patron
  • 13. Click on Submit and your hold will be placed
  • 14. You will stay logged in until you hit the logout button, so you can continue to search and place holds without entering your information again
  • 15. Problems
    • MelCat can be picky…be sure you have entered your name, number, and pin correctly.
    • Be sure you have the correct home library
    • Be sure you have fewer than 10 holds on your card
    • If all else fails, ask the Circulation Staff to check your record or have a Reference Librarian try to place the hold for you.
