Please read instructions in each section andfollow the directions.Section One: By Tiffany MalcolmIt is important that you make a commitment to succeed in your college education. Agood way to finish what you start is to start well! In one paragraph or more write whatyour intentions (right under this paragraph) are for this class and your college education.Intention statements are commitments you make to do a specific task or to take acertain action. Remember to be effective your Intention Statements must begin with "Iwill" or "I intend to" NEVER "I WILL TRY". Saying you will try is not good enough tobring about change.In this class and during my college education I intend to receive no more than a“B” in my classes. I intend on stay on top of my class work and stay organized soI am able to stable my life with school, work, and taking care of my family. I intendto stay on the right track so I can graduate within a year instead of two, so I cango straight into my medical field of medical office administration.

Pleaseread the instructions and follow the directions for each:One tool that students find most valuable is discussed in Chapter 1 and that isDISCOVERING HOW YOU LEARN. This information will help you to take advantage ofyour strengths and shore up your weaknesses in both school and daily living situations.Knowing this information will help you choose activities that match your learning style. Itwill also help you understand why you struggle with some activities, professors, andcourses and not others. You may also begin to understand why you get along, or workbetter with some individuals than others (it may help explain why you might disagreewith those you are close to as well).Learning Style Assignment #1: VARKRefresher - VARK is a questionnaire that provides users with a profile of their learningpreferences. These preferences are about the ways that they want to take-in and give-out information. Here is your assignment: 1. People that learn from a visual style, their intake iseasier when they are taught from pictures, posters, slideshows. To use the information for effective learning, study in books usingdiagrams and pictures help them understand the information better than justreading the words. Flow charts and graphs are also a way to help them absorbinformation easier. Underlining and highlighting in different colors also helpsthem learn when it comes to studying. Replace words with symbols or initials.People can also convert their lecture notes into picture notes when studying. People can communicate more effectively by explaining in detail to otherpeople. They can draw pictures to help other people understand more effectivelyalso. To perform well in test and other examinations they can re-draw and usediagrams to help them answer questions. After drawing they then can write theirexam answers. Recalling the pictures they use to study with can also help withtest and examinations.Learning Style Assignment #2: Myers/BriggsThe purpose of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® (MBTI®) personality inventory is tomake the theory of psychological types described by C. G. Jung understandable and

The essence of the theory is that much seemingly randomvariation in the behavior is actually quite orderly and consistent, being due to basicdifferences in the ways individuals prefer to use their perception and judgment. 1. Do you agree or disagree with the results – why or why not Answer: I completely agree with my results because I am that one person that cares about people that are close to me. And the fact that I do believe the world we live in is hidden messages and possibilities really names my personality. b. Do these careers match the careers you have chosen for yourself? Answer:Most of the careers that were listed I have thought about such as teaching and music, however the fact that medical doctor is on the list and I would love to be a midwife lets me know that I am right for that career. c. If no, will you change your career choice? Answer:N/A d. What can you do with this information? Answer:With this information I know that I am choosing the right choice in my career goal, and to stay determined.

Answer: Research what part of Europe I want my family to go to. Look up different places to go and organize day to day activities. Make sure everyone has passports, change of currency and everything that is needed on the trip. B. Diffuse an argument at work with an irate co-worker. Answer: Sit down with the co-worker, and let them explain what they feel is the problem. Then ask and suggest ways to help out with the situation.
  7. 7. C. Communicate with a supervisor,whose ethnicity is differentfrom yours,to solve a scheduling problem. Answer: Since ―GOLD‖ value tradition ethnicity would not be a problem. Research the person ethnicity to make sure words we use are not different meanings to theirs so there is no confusion.

The National Student Success Institute The National Student Success InstituteSection Three:Emotional Intelligence Activity: Tapping into EmotionsDirections: The following are examples adapted from Joshua Freedmans At the Heartof Leadership: How to Get Results with Emotional Intelligence. He argues that we oftenexperience emotions in a pattern. For example, similar situations will trigger a type ofresponse. It will help us, he argues, if we learn to recognize the pattern and to digdeeper to explore the reasons why we feel the way we do. Then, we should look for thewisdom in the situation and response; in other words, we should look for a lesson to learn toimprove ourselves.Using the following "typical" college student examples, reflect on your emotionalreaction to these types of situations and what you think the wisdom, or lesson, is ineach.1. EMOTION: DISCOMFORTTYPICAL SITUATION: You walk into a class for the first time and the professorseems uninterested to teach or uninteresting in general. You suddenly get worried thatyou will not enjoy this class—and you have to have it for your degree.YOUR EXPERIENCE IN THIS SITUATION:I have had a lot of classes where I feltthe teacher was uninterested in teaching the course or maybe it was just the class.I just wrote the notes that were on the board took my book home and comparedmy notes to the book text so I could understand the lesson myself.THE LESSON TO BE LEARNED:I have learned that it is not always guaranteedthat a teacher will do their job correctly if they do not want to be there.Sometimes you have to take the initiative and learn to teach yourself if you wantto succeed.
  9. 9. 2. EMOTION: ANXIETY/FEARTYPICAL SITUATION: You walk into class where the professor explains everything thatyou are going to do this semester. He talks about a 15-page research paper, field studies,and weekly journals. You dont even have access to a computer.YOUR EXPERIENCE IN THIS SITUATION:I seem to always have anxiety when itcomes to turning in something that has a big grade. Also with my anxiety also comesprocrastination.THE LESSON TO BE LEARNED:Take a day out the week when you don’t haveanything to do and do all your weekly assignments so you don’t have to rush to thelibrary all the time to do your work. Stay organize, because organization lets you knowwhat’s coming up and you won’t have anxiety about assignments that come up.
  10. 10. 3. EMOTION: EXCITEMENTTYPICAL SITUATION: You find out that you won a scholarship that will pay for books,tuition, and fees when you transfer to a four-year university next semester. You cantwait to share the good news with your family because they were having a hard timehelping support you while you were in college.YOUR EXPERIENCE IN THIS SITUATION:Every time I have a hugeaccomplishment I have a family get together so everyone can know at the sametime. And it also lets me say thank you to the people that help me along the way.THE LESSON TO BE LEARNED:It is always great to share greataccomplishments with the one’s you love, especially when they are behind youall the way. And sharing your accomplishments with them also lets them knowthat you appreciate them enough for you to share your excitement with them.

EMOTION: JOYTYPICAL SITUATION: You have taken your last final exam and will be graduating nextweek in front of your family, friends, and co-workers—and a few people who thoughtyou wouldnt make it. You have a job ready and waiting for you in your field of study.While the pay may not be high, it offers great opportunities for advancement. Your twochildren are proud to tell everyone that their mom has a college degree, and you knowthat they will be more likely to attend college because you did.YOUR EXPERIENCE IN THIS SITUATION:I would be proud that I am leading arole that they are more likely to follow. It lets me know that I am also giving them abetter chance at life because I am able to do what I love and help them; in oneday; help them pay for college and watch them walk down and accept their degreejust as they saw myself do.THE LESSON TO BE LEARNED:Do what gives you joy. Never cut yourself short onanything because in the long run you may give that one person hope to do the sameaccomplishment that you have decided to do.
