Abstract• Contemporary social freshmen rarely have opportunities to learn about their future working environment at school life.• This paper aims to design a role-playing game on Facebook that will provide a simulated working environment.• Students, for instance, could create their own role through selecting their own avatars.
Introduction• The purpose of this study is to develop a role-playing game on Facebook, which content will be related to career exploring.• The majority users on Facebook are aged from 18 to 34 therefore the main participants of this game will be aimed at college students.
Introduction• For the topic about career exploring, contemporary social freshmen rarely have opportunities to learn about their future working environment at school life.• The content of this game will provide three kinds of different company sizes: small, medium and large, and assign diverse tasks base on the scales of enterprises.• Students can create their own avatars and enter this game world, start to experience the simulation of career life and complete multiple tasks to explore the job they interest in.
Literature Review• Simulation Games – Simulation games can be regarded as activities with the outcomes of “no winning and losing”. These kinds of games have a serious purpose for students learning through gaming, and created an artificial environment that had a resemblance scenario between the virtual world and the reality. – The aim of simulations is simplify the real-life operations and combine with realistic problems. The authors will design the working environments rely on different sizes of enterprises, and provide the students with the simulated working tasks.
Literature Review• Role-playing Games – During the role-playing games, students have their own personas also give themselves involve in working with their assumed roles. – In the light of the relationship between role-play and learning, the former one can be seen as activities of simulations, which are frequently asserted to be effective instructional tools. – This game provides diverse occupations which students can choose on their own depend on their interests to experience different working path.
Literature Review• Avatar – The avatar technology has given users a chance to create the second self. – This kind of technology would be taken as an important part in digital environments, because users can express themselves by designing their own avatars. – Users notice that the avatars they created reflect their role in the online space. The section of avatar creating is implemented in this game, and providing users with choices to design the presentation of themselves.
Literature Review• Avatar – In addition, the context of environments would guide users to decide what their avatars should look like. For instance, users create avatars for dating purpose that males might be tall and females might be slim. – Owing to the simulated work environment this game provided, users can design their avatars which are suitable for working in one company. And there are some tasks will ask for the specific outfits.
Literature Review• Identities of Games on Facebook – Rao stated that those applications on Facebook usually should be defined as “casual games.” The characteristics of casual games are “easy to learn, online, no multitasking, for all, fast rewards, forgiving the player error, simple control and simpler gameplay (sometimes just one click)”. – The trend of gameplay incline to browser-based, lightweight applications and free-to-play in order to engage users who like the game experience “snack gaming” (spend few minutes to play but frequently) in playing games.
Literature Review• The operations of different company sizes – A social freshman who is first into the workplace must understands how the company operations works, also realizes that different sizes of the companies will be effected by different kinds of company strategies. – Wu and Kuo focused on the critical identities of the company manager, which are management competency, working attitude, and trust. This study takes the former two as the reference standards for the content as the statistic value of avatars in the game.
Research Questions1. Will students get more understandings of the cultures of different sizes of enterprises?2. Will students understand the diverse identities of different departments of enterprises?3. Does it help students to explore their own directions of career life in the future?
Rules and Scenarios• Simulated tasks will be given to students, which they have to read the narratives the tasks gave and follow the cues in the narratives for accomplishing the missions. There is a scenario below:

At the beginning, our guider will direct you to know this workplace, and he will guide you step by step at the first time, after that, you must do the work by yourself. Let’s do the first task! You must go to your chief to register, and find an appropriate outfit for yourself (students can go to shop to find the assigned outfit provided by the prior narratives, after doing this then back to the first task.)• Well done! Now you should know that you must to care the wearing while in the company (gain skill points by accomplishing the task.) Congratulations! You have completed the first thing! Now you can choose the tasks which you want to do but be aware that the level limit. Good luck!
Rules and Scenarios• According to the mentioned above, students have to do the tasks by reading the narratives and finding the requested items or outfits then click “do this task” to complete.• In the processing of doing or finishing the tasks, the statistic value of students will increase or decrease. For instance, the skill points will plus 5 while doing the task, but energy reduce 5 after doing this. The more tasks students achieve, the higher chance for promotion which is based on their levels.
Future Work• The current progress of this paper is still a general idea of social game designing. In order to build up the concrete rules of this game, the authors will survey the similar genre of games with this study on Facebook for assembling ideas, and look for more literatures about what kinds of departments are the basic in one company in order to let students have the initial ideas for the environment of one company. This game will be conducted on Facebook, the primary work is to get familiar with
