  • 2. Time and Resources Management
    • Many instructors underestimate the time and assets required to develop, maintain, and offer an online course. Efficient planning and time management are fundamental to the success of the courses.
    • Faculty are strongly advised to become familiar with their institution's web development unit, technical training unit, IT unit and other supports and have a strong working relationship with those supports

      • Web developer
      • Graphic (visual) designer
      • Programmer and multimedia author
  • 4. The Development on online courses
    • Centralizing the online Development Unit
      • Roles into one departmental unit has proved to be beneficial in ensuring that courses are of high quality and meet institutional guidelines.
      • Member of this department, that they establish working relationship with the course author or subject matter expert throughout the authoring process to prevent or remove any instructional barriers that might arise, and they look after the interest of the institution and also undertake other routine tasks that must be dealt with before a course can be published.
      • Example: project manager, IT expert, copy editor, graphic designer, HTML coder, media developer, administrative assistant, etc.

    • Subject matter expert (SME)
    • Ensuring that content of the online course is an appropriate alternative to the lecture content normally given in a traditional course.
    • Other task SMEs perform:
      • Identifying or creating textbooks, readings, resources
      • Ensuring pedagogical match among the course objectives, content, exercises, examinations and assignments.
      • Identifying materials that require copyright clearance and providing the instructional designer with the necessary information
      • Providing other team members with a legible copy of any written material.

    • Instructional Designer
      • In practical terms, the instructional designer:
        • Helps SME aware of appropriate pedagogical strategies and options
        • Helps to determine, create and adapt instructional resources
        • Provide advice on how best to present information
        • Writes statements of learning outcomes
        • Sequences learning outcomes
        • Act as editor
        • Act as web developer
        • Usually act as project manager
        • Arranges technical production and services
        • Evaluates instruction
