The Gospel of Jesus Christ

  1. 1. The Gospel ofJesus ChristNicholas Curtis
  2. 2. Background 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 1 Corinthians 2:21 For I am not ashamed of the gospel ofChrist, for it is the POWER of GOD untoSALVATION to those who believe Romans1:16
  3. 3. Dilemma Sin separated God from man. Mankind was in slavery to sin Sin kept mam in bondage, keeping himfrom who he truly was Man could not obey God’s law perfectly Man did not have fulfillment, waslost, without hope.
  4. 4. Dilemma The strength of sin is the law 1 Corinthians15 The law was the schoolmaster unto Christ Told us how much we needed a savior The law does not have the power tomake one holy
  5. 5. Dilemma Without God, we cannot do anything We cannot live uprightly without trusting inJesus Christ. No one is right with God apart from Jesus. Noone can be with him while being enslaved tosin. Obeying God’s laws will not make onerighteous Romans 3 Neither will our works---Isaiah 64:6 True peace and fulfillment is only found inJesus Christ
  6. 6. Dilemma Sin must be punished Fires of Hell Forever No one can save himself. Jesus saidwhoever tries to save his life will loseit, and whoever loses his life for my sakewill find it. Our life we must lose-our self-centered life
  7. 7. Solution For by grace are we saved throughfaith, not of ourselves, it is the gift of GodEphesians 2:8 And you shall know the truth and the truthshall set you free John 8:32 Jesus said, I am the way, the truth and thelife, no one comes to the father exceptthrough me John 14:6
  8. 8. What is Grace?A better question is who is grace?Jesus Christ
  9. 9. The Gospel Made Simple For God so loved the world, that he gavehis only begotten son, that whosoeverbelieves on him shall not perish, but wehave everlasting life. St. John 3:16
  10. 10. One facet of Grace is gettingwhat we do not deserve Unmerited favor We walked away from God in thegarden, we deserved to go to Hell. We were enemies of God. Far off… We had a debt we could not pay But God sent Jesus do die in our place asthe final sacrifice for our sins. …but brought nigh by the blood of Christ(Romans 5:6-7)
  11. 11. True Love of God God accepts us for who we are He loves us unconditionally so that wecan be free from sin, and walk in his light. He sent his son Jesus, so that we can berestored back to the father and have aloving relationship with him. 2 Corinthians5
  12. 12. Not of ourselves…it is the giftof GodNot of our works, lest any manboast This is nothing we can do, its God’s gift backto us. All we need to do is receive Jesus as ourLord and Savior. Nothing we can do can earn God’srighteousness or maintain our righteousness. No additional effort on our part (God doesthe repentance for us) Nothing we can do to earn God’s love. It is received by faith, trusting in his love. Faith in God means you are repenting from alifestyle of sin into a Godly lifestyle.
  13. 13. Because of Jesus It is Because of Jesus that we: Are Holy (Colossians 2:10) Have Joy and Peace (Ephesians 2:14, Philippians 4:4) Are Successful (Philippians 4:13) Are Complete (Colossians 2:10) Are Satisfied Can walk in him. It’s really all about him, not about us He gave us our positions, our food, our home (Psalms23, 68), so the focus needs to be in him, not in ourselves. Everything is THROUGH Jesus
  14. 14. The Non-negotiable Elementsof the Gospel of Christ (2 John6-9) Christ was born of a virgin (Genesis 3:15, Isaiah7:14) Jesus Christ is both God and Man (John 10:30) Jesus Christ Alone is Sufficient (Galatians 3) Christ was born in Bethlehem (Micah 7) Christ fulfilled the law, was obedient unto death(Romans 10:4, Philippians 2) Christ died for our sins (Mark 15) Christ was buried (Mark 15) Christ rose again (Mark 16) (1 Cor 15) Anyone who believes on him shall receive eternallife (John 3:16)
  15. 15. Responding to This Gospel Got to Receive by faith (Romans 10:9-10) Prepare your hearts to receive. Trust, not merely have head knowledge(James 2:14-26) Trust that Christ paid for your sins, and thatyou want to be reconciled to him. You want to be free from sin so you canwalk in the light. (John 8:32-36)
  16. 16. Recognizing Sin Blessed are the poor in spirit When one realizes how poor they are withoutChrist, and how sin has robbed them of truefulfillment…they will want to turn to Christ to paythat off. Many people trust that Christ paid their sin debt infull…but do not want anything to do with living forGod. They missed the gospel by a long shot. Believing in Christ means that you want to turnfrom slavery to sin and become new in Christ. It’s achange of heart that only God can do (Acts 3:26).Its our part to believe in Christ for the remissions ofour sins and he does the turning for us.
  17. 17. Recognizing Sin Sin is deadly and it causes us to havemisery in our lives. It is not fun. It causes us to be separated from truepeace and Joy. It fills us up with pride, which always leadsus to destruction.
  18. 18. The Nature of Grace Grace is not a license to sin, like some say Grace is an empowerment to live arighteous, joyous and peaceful life (Romans14:7) Grace wants to set us free from sin, and helpus be more like him and in him everyday. Grace causes us to deny ourselves (Mark8:34) and turn to him and trust in him. Grace is the empowerment to do the workGod has created you.
  19. 19. The Nature of Grace God loves us all Nothing can separate But God loves us so much that he wants us torestore us to what were created us to be. He does not approve of sin. But he loves us so we can repent and live forhim Grace is all about being reconciled to thefather and serving him. Deny Our Own Ambitions, Take up ourcross, and follow him. Mark 8:34
  20. 20. Its already doneJesus already paid for our sins, past, presentand future (God is outside of time) (Galatians2:13)The war in the spiritual realm is over.He already has done everything in howword…we just have to receive it by faith.Walk as if its already done.
  21. 21. How to Respond Confess with Your Mouth Believe in Your Heart Romans 10:9-10 Confess & Believe that Christ died for you, wasburied and risen again. Believe in your heart thathe did die for you so you can be with God forever. Its very simple. You do not have to say a prayer toget saved, but you must confess with your mouththat Jesus is your Lord and believe in your heartthat he is risen and still lives today.
  22. 22. Trust Only in Jesus Through Jesus and him alone we aresaved Jesus paid it all for me. Trust in his sacrifice to cleanse you from allunrighteousness, not yourself to make youright with God.
  23. 23. If you trusted in Jesus today You are a new creature You (your sinful self) is dead and your life is hid withGod (Colossians 3:3) You are buried with him (Romans 6) You are risen with him (Romans 6) You are a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:7) God has imputed Righteousness to you throughJesus (2 Corinthians 5:17) Meaning, your spirit is changed The Holy Spirit bears witness with your spirit, he willnever leave you. (Romans 8)
  24. 24. In Christ You Are… The righteousness of God in Christ Jesus. Ambassadors for Christ Joint-Heirs to God’s throne Accepted Worthy to be Called His Son Competent Holy
  25. 25. In Christ You Have…Colossians 2:102 Peter 1:3 Hope Faith Purity Joy Everything You Need Fulfillment
  26. 26. In Christ, You Have A… Relationship with the Father Relationship with the Son Relationship with the Holy Spirit
  27. 27. With the Father You can come to him and ask him foranything you need, through his son You can trust that he will meet every oneof your needs, through his son. You can have a healthy relationship withhim and experience him in your daylife, through Jesus.
  28. 28. With the Son You are the Bride of Christ You can have anything through him You are created to be like Christ You are to model him to please thefather. Christ is your intercessor, he intercedes forthose who trust him as their savior.
  29. 29. With the holy spirit The Holy Spirit Convicts us of who we arein him. He guides us on the right path. He guides us into all truth He tells us what the father and the sonwant to tell us. He gets everything throughthem He comforts and edifies us. He helps usand gives us peace and joy. He helps us along the righteous path.
  30. 30. Walking By FaithGrace-Second Facet-Empowerment to Serve Godto do Good Works The same way you receive Christ is the same way you walk inhim…In Christ We are his workmanship created to do good works (Hebrews 11) Trust in God along the way as you walk by faith. You cannot walkwhile sitting down. We rely on Jesus and not ourselves to make us into the personGod’s called us to be. Its by faith in him to finish the work in us Salvation is Justification, Sanctification, and glorification. Its all about living in God’s kingdom. You’re now a part of God’sfamily, and you are entitled to many privileges so take advantageof them. When you are justified, you are born again, when you are beingsanctified, you are growing up in Christ and when you areglorified, that’s the final deliverance from sin.
  31. 31. Freedom in Christ You are free to walk by faith in him You are free to be yourself, the righteousnessof God in Christ. You do not need a list of rules to govern yourrelationship with God, it is all done throughlove. Relationships are done through love, not law. Since God loves you, you do things becauseof God’s Love.
  32. 32. Being Yourself Legalism will try to tell a person that they haveto be this or that to be a real Christian. You already are the righteousness of God inChrist Jesus. See yourself the way God sees you, and youwill act the way God wants you to act. Take authority by declaring God’s word andliving it out. Satan will mess with you, but keepdeclaring God’s word. Accept God’s love and do not try to winpeople’s approval.
  33. 33. Third Facet of Grace-Accepting God’s Approval Those who haven’t accepted God’sapproval will try to find approval in man. Only God’s approval one needs. When we do, we can be acceptingtowards others and please them so theycan come to know Christ. We can love others without being inbondage to others. We can love without being in bondage/
  34. 34. The Gospel is Still Relevant Even after you are born again, it’s thesame gospel that keeps you movingforward. Its because of him we have everything. In everything give thanks, for it is the will ofGod for us (1 Thessalonians 5:18) It is in him we live and move our being.
  35. 35. Developing our Relationshipwith God Spend time with him Get to Know him Develop Your faith in him by growing in the graceand knowledge of Jesus Christ. Basically in a nutshell…Grow in Christ. Let Christ consume you and be everything to you. Its all about Jesus when it comes down to it. Walk in him, stay free from sin. Forgive others and love others and show the samelove of God to others.
  36. 36. Loving Others Serve others the same way you serve God, by loving them with the same loveGod loves you with. Be interested in pleasing them (in a non-manipulative way) for theiredification so they can come to know Jesus. Do not compromise so you canwin others. It does not work that way. Pleasing others the right way means putting people into the equation whenyou communicate. Be interested genuinely in them and love themunconditionally. You do not have to do or allow anything that is ungodly. Don’t judge others, show them compassion and love for their wretchedness sothey can come to know the Lord. This is a hot-button issue because many people want us to love them andsupport their causes. Many people justify their own behavior and say God stillloves them, but God doesn’t approve and neither shall we. We need to loveothers and serve the world so they can know Christ. Be an example to others, and love the people around you. Religious spiritswant to manipulate and control and put down, but Genuine love is respectfuland gentle and shows others compassion. It lets Go, and lets God.
  37. 37. Personal Discipleship Add to your faith…virtue And to virtue…knowledge And to knowledge…temperance And to temperance…perseverance And to perseverance…Godliness And to Godliness….brotherly kindness And to Brotherly Kindness….Love 2 Peter 1:5-8 Develop your faith by reading God’s word andstaying in prayer. Find someone to hold youaccountable.
  38. 38. Corporal Discipleship Find people in your life that will guide youin the right direction. Get plugged into a church where youcan grow spiritually and be accountableto one another. Remove this independent egotistical spiritthat wants it your way. You need others soserve the brethren and offer help toanyone who needs it.
  39. 39. The Result of Changed Lives Fruit of the Spirit is: Love Joy Peace Patience Kindness Gentleness Faithfulness Goodness Self-controlDevelopped Faith:1. Virtuous2. Well-Knowledged3. Well-Disciplined4. Perseverant5. Godly6. Kind7. Loving
