Nervous System Notes Nervous System Notes Presentation Transcript

    • Nervous System
    • What makes up the Nervous System?
      • Brain
      • Spinal cord
      • Nerves
      • Sense Organs (eyes, ears, nose, tongue, skin)
    • What are the jobs of the Nervous system?
      • Receive information – both inside and outside your body (Ex: Wind blowing, low glucose in your blood)
      • Responds to information – reacts to stimuli (Ex: soccer ball comes toward you – you kick the ball)
      • Maintains homeostasis – directs the body to respond to information (Ex: hungry – eat, thirsty – drink)
    • Central Nervous System
      • The Central nervous system contains the BRAIN and the SPINAL CORD .
      • The CNS is like the CONTROL CENTER of our bodies.
      • The BRAIN allows us to control most of the functions in our bodies
      • The SPINAL CORD connects our brain to our nerves.
    •
    • Peripheral Nervous System
      • The peripheral nervous system consists of a network of NERVES that branch out from the CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM and CONNECT to the rest of the BODY .
    • Peripheral Nervous System
      • A total of 43 pairs of nerves make up the entire PNS. 12 pairs of nerves originate from the brain. 31 pairs of nerves begin in the spinal cord.
    • Cartilage Disk Kck Kck
    • Two Groups of the PNS
      • Somatic Nervous System – controls voluntary actions
      • Ex: Using a fork, tying your shoelaces
      • Autonomic Nervous System – controls involuntary actions
      • Ex: heartbeat, breathing
    • Analogy
      • The central nervous system is like _________, while the nerves of the peripheral nervous system is like the ______________.
