Story Idea
‘FEAR OF FLYING’ AND THANKSGIVING
Wednesday, November 25—the day before Thanksgiving—will be the busiest air
travel day of the year. For some, the whole idea of getting on a plane is not an
option even though it may well be the most convenient way to travel to spend the
holiday with family and friends. In fact, the idea of flying may strike paralyzing
fear. It’s known as Fear of Flying, a phobia that White Plains Hospital Center’s
Anxiety and Phobia Treatment Center has been treating for many years.
Established in 1971, the Center was the first of its kind in the U.S. to pioneer the
cognitive-behavioral treatment of anxiety disorders.
Known as the Freedom to Fly Workshop, the program helps participants
overcome fear of flying that is affecting their personal and/or professional life.
Taught by a psychologist and an airline pilot, the course includes group meetings
at Westchester County Airport, individual practice sessions and a “graduation”
flight to Boston.
The Center also specializes in the treatment of other anxiety disorders including
driving, heights, enclosed spaces, insects and animals and agoraphobia (being
at a distance from home).
If you are interested in undertaking a Thanksgiving theme Fear of Flying feature,
we would be happy to connect with you with the Anxiety and Phobia Treatment
Center’s psychologist and an individual who has successfully been treated and is
enjoying life phobia-free. Please advise if we can arrange interviews.
