COMMUNICATING A VISION
Or how to present like Tom Ford
   Thomas Miles, Planning Director, Lavender*
                  March 2010
1993 - verge of bankruptcy
2004 - $10bn
You can’t create something that is purposefully
sexy. What I do is dress and beautify the
   contemporary woman and make them
     special ,luxurious, tempting
Devotion to a muse

“I create a character and then
costume her throughout her life”
The expression of that vision - the fashion show
“In a fashion show you have 13
minutes to convince a room of
  200 people of your vision.......a
very cynical, seen-it-all audience....
            13 minutes.”
You need to have an idea

You have to tell a story
Know what you stand for

“As a fashion designer, I knew what I was
about. I asked myself, "Why does the world
need to see my clothes. What is my
message?" The most important thing is to
discover that — otherwise, who cares? It's
                 just fluff.”
The Starting point
defined acts

every act starts with a “Boom!”

“One Potent Piece to hold the
    audience’s attention”

hip hugging trousers, silhouette dress, skinny suit
Taking people on a journey

     Day into Night

Temptation into Seduction

  Urbane to Opulence
Measure of success

    “...to feel the audience reacting
together to your story. It is
palpable....at the end as you finish they
all exhale at the same time.”
LESSONS
• Know what you stand for & have a vision

• Create a narrative for your audience

• Don’t focus on the end result, focus on what will get you there

• Get and hold someone’s attention

• Build your story (how many acts do you have?)

• Emotional engagement measurement
Be a brand that does, not says

“Words are sometimes just a strategy to
          cover nakedness”

         “Character is action”
