MAJOR PRINCIPLES AND GOALS (FROM SPACE PLAN TF) 1. The notion of the “Third Place” was first popularized by Ray Oldenburg in his 1991 book entitled, The Great Good Place. Oldenburg suggested that the “First Place” is the home, the “Second Place” is the work location, and “Third Places” are those spaces or places outside of home and work that add value to people’s daily lives -- parks, pubs, recreation spots, churches, civic spaces, libraries, etc. -- where people can gather and interact.
