  • Robert Ballard on exploring the oceans 1
  • Robert BallardAmerican oceanographer & marine geologist, best known for his discovery of the Titanic wreckage in 1985.Ballard’s pioneering of deep-diving submersibles laid thefoundation for deep-sea archaeology. 2
  • Ballard gives a clear explanation and presents facts as to why he feels we should be more concerned with the exploration of ouroceans and developing our youth to become involved in these efforts. 3
  • Comparing ocean exploration & Nasa funding, Ballard makes a key point on how the budget for Nasafunding, if used for ocean exploration, could fund the N.O.A.H program for 1,600 years. 4
  • Titanic New Life Forms Vents Robert Ballard goes on to explain how key discoveries of mountains, vents, natural resources, new life forms, and lost archaeological, treasures have been discovered that where thought to have never existed. Alternate Energy Source Underwater Mountains 5
  • Dynamism Rating: I would rate Robert Ballard’s dynamism as a 4/5, because he explained all of the information and gave useful examples of the topic, but I thought he could have been a bit more detailed with some of the information.6
  • Robert Ballard clearly followed Mary Duarte & Garr Reynolds convention of clear images and examples when presenting the information and was to the point and very informative.7
  • Listening to the presentation from Robert Ballard has taught me that it’simportant to give examples when explaining the information you arepresenting, so that the audience can get a clear understanding of the topic andto keep the audience involved in the presentation from beginning to end. 8
  • Robert Ballard vs. Ken RobinsonI thought both speakers made good use of examples and story telling to appeal to the audience and relaythe information about their separate topics. Both speakers in my opinion could have been more detailedwhen explaining key points in the information, but overall the information was precise and to the point. 9
  • During Robert Ballard’s presentation he mentioned that the ocean floor needed tobe mapped out and that we have better maps of Venus & Mars than we do of ourown oceans. This is a map of a region of the ocean floor that he spoke about. 10
  • According to Robert Ballard’s presentation the earth is covered in 72% water. This means that over 50% of theplanet is submerged in water. It was also thought by ocean researchers that because of the depth and darknessof the ocean that photo-synthesis could not occur to produce new life forms or sustain plant life in certainareas, but Robert Ballard’s discoveries have given a new perspective to the subject. 11
  • New technology and equipment will be amajor contributing factor in theexploration of the oceans in the future.Robert Ballard has constructed anddesigned a new vessel to help exploreuncharted regions of the ocean and a newbase of operations to store and analyzedata. 12
  • Wreckage found by RobertBallard of the Titanic in 1985 13
  • Underwater thermal vents discovered byRobert Ballard during exploration. 14
  • Artifacts found in the Black Sea Coast line & Location of the Black Sea Robert Ballard has made many discoveries and his newest exploration mission will take him to the shores of the Black Sea where some artifacts have already been discovered. The artifacts are perfectly preserved by the chemical make up that already exists in the Black Sea. 15
  • Robert Ballard has helped start programs with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America in andeffort to stimulate the minds of our youth so that they can take on the task of explorationfor a new generation. Ballard believes that the youth can produce the next group of oceanexplorers. 16
  • Image of the Hercules as it is about to be submerged for exploration. Robert Ballarddesigned and engineered this submersible device for deep sea exploration. 17
  • 18
  • Robert Ballard has redefined ocean exploration and has givennew purpose to the exploration of the most mysterious area onearth. There are so many unknown elements of the ocean and itis truly worth discovering. We may need only to look to theocean for the worlds resources and unknown life forms andRobert Ballard is a pioneer in the road to making that a reality. 19
  • Robert Ballard’s presentation has given a great deal of information that Idid not know about the ocean. Based on the TED talks from Robert Ballard& Ken Robinson I would advice my classmates to be direct in explaining theinformation of their topic, site examples and story telling so as to give abetter understanding to their audience, and telling a joke or two during thepresentation can only help the audience to feel comfortable and relaxduring the presentation. 20
